Promise and Prophecy
In 1889, a young New York socialite published an audacious volume of love poetry. It was filled with direct attacks on the patriarchy, sacrilegious suggestions, and sexually explicit imagery. The poet was excoriated by some and lauded by others. She wrote prolifically and published widely. One critic wrote that her work displayed "promise and prophecy of brilliant and lasting achievement." So why haven't you heard of Anne Reeve Aldrich? Find out on episode two of season one, and listen to several of her passionate poems.
