Providing Client-Centered Care
In this episode, Tres discusses the importance of providing spiritually-integrated care and counseling that is client-centered. This doesn't mean that counselors of faith have to leave their convictions at the door, but keeping the focus on the client and learning about who they are spiritually can allow us to connect with them on a deeper level, and even inspire them to foster a closer relationship with God on their own. Solid, ethical and informed pastoral counseling advice
Tres, I’ve listened to your podcast for the last 6 months after deciding to enter a graduate program to obtain my CHMC at Richmont University. One of your episodes on the field was helpful in my own discernment of entering the mental health field. I liked your recent dialogue on client-centered approach and changes to pastoral counseling to better serve an array of clients with your biblical foundation. I think being able to provide this type of care will be crucial into the future. I love seeing the topical podcasts as well and would love to continue to hear how a pastoral counselor works with clients with in key areas like anxiety, depression, grief, etc. Thanks for sharing your resources and teaching with us on this platform!
Usually good but twists scripture sometimes
I enjoyed listening at first but then found more and more instances where scripture was twisted to mean what he wanted it to mean. For example he said that Paul saying women should not be leaders in the church over the men was only meant for that one church he was writing to… but this is taught multiple places in the Bible, even referencing Adam and Eve as an instance where the man should have been leading. So how can he say that this teaching was only meant for that one church/ time in culture? Because it would fit his narrative to say that. But that is not what scripture says. Similar twists are often made with regard to LGBTQ within the church. Loving people is a goal of the church but not at the expense of telling people that sin is acceptable to God and okay to tolerate in church leadership. The Bible very clearly rejects this. I want to learn biblical counseling on God’s terms, not on my terms using scripture to back up what I want it to. But I still learned things I found useful here and there.
Client centered theology
I’ve listen to this podcast for a while now, and I had trouble with the most recent podcast. The speaker mentions client centered counseling and being more concerned about the clients theology than biblical truth. Clearly the speaker cares for his clients and wants to give grace but hard truths bring tremendous break throughs. I believe that psychology and Christianity meet in the middle because the creator made us and is Lord over our minds and the way they work. There is no need to water down scripture to make it fit into different situations. I trust that being truthful in love will always be the best choice.
