In the Autumn of 1957, a series of events unfolded that, for a time, left U.S. defense officials believing that the country was on the verge of war with the Soviet Union, as a pair of mysterious objects were tracked on radar systems making their way toward a series of high security facilities. Before action could be taken, the objects mysteriously vanished, and the story receded into the shadows of Cold War memories for decades, prior to a series of once-secret CIA files surfaced detailing the startling incident.
What do such circumstances say about the U.S. military's capabilities in terms of unidentified aerial phenomena? Based on a recent series of documents released through FOIA requests, decades later the U.S. is still struggling to reconcile the problem presented by UAP in our airspace. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we analyze the ongoing problem that may very well represent the DoD's darkest UAP secret of all: what it doesn't know about mysterious aerial phenomena.

 In 1950, a bizarre story involving the alleged crash of a flying saucer near Aztec, New Mexico, and its subsequent recovery by the U.S. military, sparked one of the most notorious claims in 20th-century UFO studies. For years before the beginning of the modern UFO era in 1947, sightings of bizarre, cigar-shaped flying objects capable of unusual aerial feats were reported by pilots during World War II, as well as military and civilian pilots over the Americas. According to the findings of the DoD's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the object that crash-landed near Roswell, New Mexico in the summer of 1947 was a balloon used during a once-secret covert operation called Project Mogul. These findings, of course, are the same conclusions the U.S. Air Force came to decades ago which were detailed in a pair of official reports that sought to definitively explain what, for many, had once been deemed Ufology's "smoking gun"... but could there still be more to the story? 
This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we look at developments that have occurred in the years since the Air Force's 1990s assessments, which were repeated in AARO's recent historical report on the U.S. government's historical involvement with UFOs. Then, we examine an unsettling series of alternative hypotheses about what might have occurred in the New Mexico desert so many decades ago, and whether they could offer a better explanation for one of history's most baffling cases.

A new Defense Department report detailing the United States government's involvement in investigations of unidentified anomalous phenomena, more commonly known as UFOs, was released late last week, resulting in divided opinions over the merit of the research conducted by the DoD's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO).

In the 1970s, the existence of a once-secret program called "Project Moon Dust" first came to the attention of UFO researchers employing the Freedom of Information Act to obtain U.S. government documents about unidentified aerial phenomena. Although the U.S. Air Force initially denied its existence, it was later confirmed that Project Moon Dust, along with the similar Project Blue Fly, had been tasked with the acquisition of any fallen space objects believed to have originated within the Soviet Union... but is that all the program collected?
