Really Impressive Interviewing Ability

If you want to learn how to moderate a great interview, watch Kap Chatfield 📼🎙 operate on his show.

It’s been a long time (and many many podcasts) since I felt someone interviewed me so well that I will use their interview as an intro to my next prospect.

Kap achieved this by:

1️⃣ Doing his homework.
You can tell Kap took a little bit of time to understand what is unique about what I do. This allowed him to ask questions that got me pulling on the right strings.

2️⃣ Structuring open questions.
Kap finds the right mix of keeping a question open enough for me to speak to it, but specific enough for me to stay within the story he’s trying to tell. This is what I most try to copy from Kap. It’s one of his super powers.

3️⃣ Building story into the interview.
After re-listening, it’s clear to me that Kap came into the conversation knowing he wanted a structure that made the show a story. He hit on the big idea early to engage the listener, broke down how I figured it out, why it worked, and then how to do it. Phenomenal structure.

4️⃣ Seamlessly tied it to his expertise.
This is underrated. Not only does this make it more sustainable so Kap and his team can keep making great content, but when you can add your own perspective to the conversation, it helps the guest come up with new angles, themselves.

THIS feeling- the feeling that your guest will want to use your interview to explain herself to people- is what you should strive for in every interview you host, every panel you moderate, or any intro call you take to get to know someone.

It is the ultimate gift of value to help someone describe the value they bring to the world in the best way possible.
