Babe Ruth: The First Great Sports Icon The Hero Show

    • Self-Improvement

After the lowest point in baseball history, the 1919 Chicago Black Sox gambling scandal, Babe Ruth stepped into the limelight and saved the sport. He became one of the primary figures who made the "Roaring 20s" roar, giving hope to millions of people during the Great Depression. His rise from an “incorrigible and vicious” youth—in an orphanage—to the first great sports icon is a story of effort, perseverance, and courage. As he put it, “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.”

He was so glorified by Americans that during World War II, enemy Japanese forces were trained to say one sentence in English: “To hell with Babe Ruth.”
