S3 E9 ROGER SMITH Harmonica Teacher and Player for The Bluescasters

Roger Smith is a South Australian harmonica player who has been playing with his Blues/Rock band The Bluescasters for the past 16 years. Roger began his musical journey playing the djembe in a world music band called 'Fuego' with his good friend Glen Reynolds. Roger has always loved the blues and was really interested in learning how to play the harmonica, so he eventually decided to go and have some lessons at WEA with John Hastwell. A few years later he heard about an eclectic jam session that was happening at Bookends Bookshop on Unley Road which he began to attend on a regular basis, and this is where he first met The Bluescasters vocalist/guitarist Tony Pettas. Roger grew tired of having to travel to Unley and the other jams that he was attending every week so he decided to start his own jam which he did at the Blackwood RSL. Roger ran this weekly jam for 6 years and it was during this period that he began to regularly jam with the other musicians who he would end up forming the blues/rock band 'The Bluescasters' with. 'The Bluescasters' had the first gig at The Old Clarendon Winery, and due to their popularity, regularly played there on a Sunday afternoon until the winery closed. Roger's love of the blues also led to him starting the Port Noarlunga Blues Festival with a friend in 2017, and he is also a former Adelaide Roots and Blues Association (ARBA) committee member.

If you are interested in having harmonica lessons with Roger you can contact him via phone on 0411 702 845 or email sroger@senet.com.au

Music: intro "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant.

Outro: The Bluescasters performing the Jimi Hendrix version of "Come On" (often called "Let the Good Times Roll") which was written by New Orleans rhythm and blues artist Earl King. The song's lyrics are based on "Let the Good Times Roll", the 1946 jump blues hit by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five.

S3 E8 SNOOKS LA VIE Formerly the frontman of The Deliverymen, The Hiptones, Snooks La Vie & The Reprise, The Fabulous Rumble'ators, currently with Romaldo’s Groove, The Dirty Roots Band, and more

S3 E8 Snooks La Vie (Paul Wimbles) is a South Australian born blues/soul/country vocalist and harmonica player who first began to play the harmonica after finding a brand new Hohner Marine band harmonica that was underneath a former partners bed. He began to teach himself how to play whilst sitting outside in his Monaro. He first started out playing on the local scene with a punk band called The Enemy, and switched to playing the blues after his work mate Rubes suggested that he give this genre a try. The pair started out playing together at work functions and it wasn't too long before they put together their first band The Deliverymen, who were later to become The Hiptones (after a few lineup changes.) Snooks had always been a fan of Cold Chisel, and after meeting their harmonica player David Blight at a David Blight and The Flyers gig, Snooks had a few lessons with him before deciding to concentrate on the more traditional blues sound that comes from playing by using the tongue blocking technique. Snooks La Vie acquired his moniker from his friend and music/work colleague Papa Rubes which started out as just a bit of fun and stuck amongst his peers for being known as an avid fan of New Orleans musician ‘Snooks Eaglin’. As former front man of The Hiptones, Snooks has enjoyed the success of awards such as a South Australian Music Award for best blues band/act in 1997, signed to a major label SONYBMG in 2006 and an APRA nomination for best ‘blues/roots’ work in 2008. Snooks also took out South Australian Blues Vocalist of the Year for three consecutive years (2008, 2009, and 2010.) The Hiptones recorded their second album "Right Now" at Joe Camilleri's studio Woodstock studios with James Black producing the album. Snooks current bands are Romaldo’s Groove, The Dirty Roots Band, and his new band Snooks La Vie's Blues All Star Revue. He also performs in duos with Nikko (Nick Kipridis) and Snooks, Courtney Robb and Snooks, and J J Fields (Sav Palaktsoglou) and Snooks La Vie.

BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series Host/Creator Di Spillane's interview for “The Underground Railroad”, her debut blues/gospel single, released on the 22nd of September, 2022.

Bonus Episode; BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series Host/Creator Di Spillane released her debut blues/gospel single “The Underground Railroad” on the 22nd of September to raise Narcolepsy awareness on World Narcolepsy Day. In this episode, you will hear Di Spillane being interviewed by Zofia Dendunnen from PBAFM and then by Julie Reynolds whose community radio network program 'Saturday Breakfast with Julie Reynolds', is aired on over 30 community radio stations across Australia. “The Underground Railroad” is available to purchase on bandcamp,  Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.

To purchase on Apple Music:: https://music.apple.com/au/album/the-underground-railroad-single/1642022382

    To purchase on bandcamp https://dispillane.bandcamp.com/track/the-underground-railroad

Di was inspired to write “The Underground Railroad” after discovering that one of the railroad’s most famous conductors Harriet Tubman remarkably managed to escape from slavery on her own, only to then spend more than 10 years returning to Maryland to lead her family and friends safely to freedom via a secret network of people, places and routes that provided shelter and assistance to escaping slaves, called the Underground Railroad. She did this despite suffering from the rare sleep disorder “secondary narcolepsy” or “posttraumatic hypersomnia”, which she developed after having received a severe blow to her head.

Di has lived with type 1 narcolepsy with cataplexy since childhood, and despite having had symptoms for most of her life, she didn't receive a diagnosis until she was 49. Di decided to release this song on the 22nd of September, 2022 to coincide with World Narcolepsy Day to help raise awareness of this rare debilitating sleep disorder.

Di Spillane vocals, Gail Page - bv's and harmonies, Rick Melick - piano, Edward Pollard - drums, Denis Surmon - bass guitar. Recorded by Brett Sody at Sody - Pop Recording Studios and Services, Norwood, South Australia.

S3 E7 DAVID BLIGHT, Harmonica player for Cold Chisel, The Flyers, Mick Kidd and David Blight, SA Music Hall of Fame, Artist work painter/sculptor, & John Martins Christmas Pageant Floats

S3 E7 DAVID BLIGHT, Harmonica player for Cold Chisel, The Flyers, Mick Kidd and David Blight, SA Music Hall of Fame, Artist work painter/sculptor, & John Martins Christmas Pageant Floats

South Australian-born musician DAVID BLIGHT is without a doubt one of Australia’s premier harmonica players. There aren’t too many people in Australia who are not familiar with the harmonica playing of David Blight. Every time you hear that favorite of Australia’s rock anthems, KHE SANH by Cold Chisel you will hear David’s distinctive harp lines weaving in and out behind Jimmy Barnes’ vocals. He was and still is Cold Chisels harp player of choice and has recorded and toured with the band collectively and individually throughout the years. During this interview, David shares his musical journey from listening to the radio and hearing "Bring it on Home" from a freshly released Led Zeppelin 2 when the light was well and truly switched on, to playing whenever he could with local bands, to how working at John Martins led David Blight to become Cold Chisel’s harmonica player. David formed his own band The Flyers in 1982 and has continued his connection, recording with Cold Chisel and band members Don Walker and Ian Moss. Mick Kidd together with Dave Blight won the Adelaide Roots & Blues Associations inaugural "Memphis Blues Challenge" (solo/duo) in 2015 and were sent to represent Australia in the 2016 International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA – This was following up on their success at the 2014 South Australia Blues Awards winning the "Outstanding Solo/Duo." On 17th November 2015, a small group from the Adelaide Music Collective/ SA Music Hall Of Fame attended Cold Chisel's soundcheck to surprise Dave Blight with an induction. He had previously declined an induction as he felt he was not worthy. After many more nominations and public outpouring, it was decided that he would be inducted in collaboration with Cold Chisel.

Music: intro "BAND IT ABOUT" theme song, written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Cut you loose", written by Mick Kidd, is track 5 off of Mick Kidd and David Blight's sophomore album “Menu of Sin”, which was released on the 17th of July, 2017.

S3 E5 WILL KALLINDERIS aka Harpin' Will K - Solo Performer playing Harmonica/Guitar/Singer/Songwriter, former bands Star Step Evolution, The Young Sequoias, Cal Williams Jr.

S3 E5 WILL KALLINDERIS aka Harpin' Will K - Solo Performer playing Harmonica/Guitar/Singer/Songwriter, former bands Star Step Evolution, The Young Sequoias, Cal Williams Jr.

Will Kallinderis aka Harpin’ Will K joins Di Spillane this week to discuss his musical journey, a journey that has followed him from Ottawa, Edmonton Alberta, Vancouver, and since 2005 South Australia. Will Kallinderis aka 'Harpin’ Will K' is a singer-songwriter who performs a lively mix of original roots, funk, and blues. Emerging in 2016 with his debut solo album Last Of The Singing Peace Chiefs, a collection of acoustic guitar-driven songs, full-throttled harmonica soloing, and backup harmony vocals. More recently he has been revisiting early influences to create a repertoire of raw ‘n’ gritty stripped-back blues. Will’s been performing on the local Adelaide scene as a soloist and in various projects since 2007.

At 16, Will was inspired to pick up the harmonica after hearing the music of Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, and Bob Dylan. The following year he took up the guitar and was influenced by Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf), John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters to name a few. Will’s soulful roots sound is a result of many years honing his skills as a regular busker on the streets of Edmonton, Alberta followed by performances in the local blues and folk scene. Over the years his musical influences expanded to include the sounds of R&B, folk, rock as well as Latin, funk, and world music.

Will moved to Adelaide in 2005 and in 2007 he formed a power trio called Star Step Evolution with Mike Palmer on bass and Benjamin Gallasch on drums. Featuring a funky, bluesy, reggae style with plenty of harmonica soloing. The members parted ways in late 2009. Will continued gigging around town as a solo performer honing and evolving his singer-songwriter roots originals as well as building a repertoire of blues.

In 2017 Will joined local slide guitarist Cal Williams Jr for several festival shows. He stepped in at late notice when Adelaide’s blues icon Chris Finnen had to pull out of the Fringe show ‘A History Of Early Blues’. The success of the show led to Will joining Cal Williams Jr and Kory Horwood on double bass for the next two seasons. Will also joined Cal and Kory in Cal’s project The Ukulele Blues Explosion featuring stripped-back possibilities with ukulele, bass, and harmonica. In 2018 Will formed The Young Sequoias with Matt Colyer on drums featuring upbeat guitar and amplified harmonica together with Matt’s catchy rhythms that introduced new interpretations of Will’s debut album along with a vast range of new songs drawing on roots, rock, jazz, soul, funk and electric delta blues. One of the highlights for the duo was the successful sold-out 2020 Fringe show, ‘Electric Delta – Blues Hits Big Town’ celebrating the Blues from raw and gritty Mississippi to the refined urban sounds of Chicago, featuring popular classics by such artists as Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Mississippi Fred McDowell and more.

The Young Sequoias have taken a break and may remain dormant indefinitely. In the meantime, Will is focusing on recording his next solo album and considering teaching harmonica.

Music: intro "Band It About", written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Where Eagles Fly" by Will Kallinderis, from his debut album "Last Of The Singing Peace Chiefs"
