Pop-Punk & Pizza #104: Jake Newling of Joyful

I can't imagine what it must be like to start up a brand new band right before a pandemic hits. I'm sure joyful. of Chicago is not the only band that is experiencing this right now. At least it hasn't stopped the new pop rock trio from releasing new music. Joyful's latest single, "Pilot Light", continues to showcase the band's strong songwriting skills. Drummer, Jake Newling, tells me how the band and song came to be! Plus, we talk about his funny TikTok videos and his other band, Tiny Kingdoms. Great to catch up with you, Jake!

    Pop-Punk & Pizza #103: Adrian & Duane of D20

You just never know what you're going to learn on Pop-Punk & Pizza Podcast. Today, I learned a lot about Albuquerque, New Mexico! Albuquerque is home to punk band, D20. Their lead vocalist, Adrian Phoenix, and lead guitarist, Duane Hoskie, schooled me about their hometown, and much more. We also shared our views about Machine Gun Kelly's version of pop punk. MGK is quite the hot topic in the scene right now after the release of his latest single, "concert for aliens", on Tuesday, August 4th, 2020.

Singer/Songwriter, Kev Wright. Photo by, Shell G Photography.

Hello! Welcome to the first of many episodes in a new series on Pop-Punk & Pizza Podcast I’m calling, “Songs & Stories”. This new series will feature a different singer/songwriter each episode, performing and discussing their most heartfelt songs. The inaugural episode is with my dear friend and mentor, Kev Wright, who I’ve known for half of my life now. Kev taught me early on in my music career that kindness and compassion will take you farther than anything else. Not just in music but in life as well. Kev’s last public performance was four years ago. We find out why it's been so long and also hear new songs he's worked on during quarantine.

    Love,

    Jacques LaMore

    Pop-Punk & Pizza #100: Jacques LaMore

Pop-Punk & Pizza Podcast has officially made it to one-hundred episodes! I'm still in disbelief that we have finally reached this milestone. I say that because at the beginning of January 2020, I announced my hiatus from the podcast. My mental health had reached an all time low and it was hard to function through my day to day life, let alone recording new episodes of the podcast. I had told you I didn't know when I would be back. In the back of my mind, I thought it was going to be at least a year before I returned. Right after I made the hiatus announcement, I began focusing more on my mental health. The psychologist I had been seeing for several months said it was time that I gave medication a try. I've struggled with depression and other forms of mental illness most of my life. I always told myself my problems were in my surroundings, not my mind. It wasn't a chemical imbalance in my head, it was the hardships that I was going through. I convinced myself that medication wasn't going to solve or help my problems one bit, so why take them? Well, I decided to give it a try. After a few months, I was starting to feel a lot better. Day to day life was becoming easier and I felt more stable. Then, the Covid-19 pandemic shut everything down. In March, I decided it was time to say, "F**k it", and come back to the podcast. I wanted to help keep music alive during these crazy times. It's because of you that I'm here today. I didn't reach one-hundred episodes. We reached one hundred episodes. That includes guests, listeners, family, and friends.

I can't thank you enough for the support.

    With Love,

    Jacques LaMore

Hey, I hope you're having a great week! So, last week on the Pop-Punk & Pizza social media pages I made a post saying I needed to have more female guests on the podcast. One of the first women I thought of was, Tahlena Chikami, lead vocalist, of ska punk band, Bite Me Bambi. I've been hooked on their single, "Hot Lava", ever since it was introduced to me earlier this year. After reading up on Tahlena a little, I thought to myself, "She would be fun to talk to!", and she was. Thank you for your time, Tahlena!

    Love
