Beauty pageants have traditionally been contests that focus on ranking people by their physical attributes. In current times, pageants have evolved to include inner beauty, talent, and intelligence, but the reason that people enter these contests haven’t really changed. Some enter to build confidence, while some use it as a way to meet new people. More often, winning pageants gives the contestant opportunities in the worlds of modelling and entertainment. And then, there are all the cash prizes and possible scholarships that one can win…this makes entering pageants enticing to many.

But most may not realize that there is a dark side behind these contests. For some, beauty pageants can trigger eating disorders, lower self esteem, and cause depression. But for others, being centre stage gets them noticed in ways that no one would ever want.
