    81: Heart Month

    81: Heart Month

February is the month we celebrate and bring awareness to all the beautiful babies out there with congenital heart defects. My baby, Meadow, was born with a congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot, and I felt called to talk about not only Meadow’s story, but what it’s been like as a heart mom and a Nurse Practitioner. In this episode, I’m sharing how I’ve navigated these two roles, where I’ve found synergy in both, and where I’ve had to separate being Meadow’s mom and a Nurse Practitioner.

AbidingNP ,

Thank you for sharing your story and gifts!

Sarah Michelle- Thank you for sharing your story about nursing school and how you overcame anxiety, self doubt, and less-than-helpful discouragement from a nursing instructor. I think that those who persevere and grow through challenges that life brings have super special gifts to share in encouraging others because of it.

I too was told I should drop out of nursing school and consider a different career path as a 19-year-old girl. I had some major health challenges and the physician who told me this made me feel like the physical health issues that I was facing defined me and deemed me unfit to be a nurse. I’m grateful that through God and my supportive community I persevered.

I am victorious in finishing my BSN, working as a RN for 7 years, finishing my MSN FNP degree, passing the ANCC board exam, and will soon be starting a FNP position at a primary care clinic. My physical health has also improved dramatically. Instead of my health challenges over the years being a hinderance in my nursing career, they have been a strength providing unique empathy and experience to share with my patients while caring, diagnosing, and supporting them.

I am so appreciative of the supportive new nurse practitioner community that Sarah Michelle creates!
