Episode 49 (May 4, 2021): Brendan O'Donnell, CEO of Newport Craft and G&P Acquisition

Episode 49 (May 4, 2021): Brendan O'Donnell, CEO of Newport Craft and G&P Acquisition

It’s one of the most complete interviews we’ve ever done on Beers, Business, and Balls: we welcome Brendan O’Donnell to the show this week.

Brendan’s path to the beer industry was one of the most unconventional, yet interesting stories we’ve ever heard. Brendan started school at Roanoke College in Virginia with nothing more than an interest in business and his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers. After working in finance for a few years, he finally decided he wanted more out of his life, and began his journey into craft beer.

Brendan purchased then-Newport Storm Brewery; a brand that was doing well, but needed work. Since then, Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Company has blossomed into a household name throughout New England. What is making Brendan so successful, and how is Newport Craft growing their market share in the Northeast? We discuss Brendan’s new acquisitions of Radiant Pig and Braven, his new endeavor onto the New York Stock Exchange, and a rum partnership with the New York Mets.

Episode 48 (April 27, 2021): Scott Greenberg, CEO and Co-Founder of StarStock Inc.

Episode 48 (April 27, 2021): Scott Greenberg, CEO and Co-Founder of StarStock Inc.

BEERS (4:22): Sending it back to New Hampshire for this one! Will reviews “Face Plant Into Rock” by Granite Roots - this Belgian Tripel will have you face planting into some of your own rocks if you aren’t careful.  Jake reviews Common Man IPA, a staple of New Hampshire convenience stores...a good selection for a neutral setting.
BUSINESS (10:47): We catch up with Scott Greenberg, an entrepreneur finding success in an unlikely market.  Scott recently founded StarStock, a marketplace for sports trading card buyers and sellers; customers list the cards on a portal, ship them to a secure vault, and earn money as a player’s “stock” rises.  StarStock now has over 800k cards in the vault, 600k traded, and adds 50k cards to its site every week. Scott discusses how he built one of the fastest-growing sports marketplaces, pitching to investors like NBA All-Star Trae Young & Twitch co-founder Justin Kan, and what’s to come in the future.
BALLS (44:57): The NFL Draft is finally here - one of the most anticipated drafts in recent history!  Where do the quarterbacks go? Who will trade up to get their franchise star? We give our dream picks for both the Giants and Patriots.  We also discuss the baseball happenings of the week...from Trevor Bauer & Fernando Tatis Jr. dueling, to Shohei Ohtani’s historic start to the year.  We finish with the miracle season that the New York Knicks are off to.

Episode 47 (April 21, 2021): 1 Year Anniversary! Featuring recurring guests David Silverman and John Fanta

Episode 47 (April 21, 2021): 1 Year Anniversary! Featuring recurring guests David Silverman and John Fanta

ONE YEAR! We finally made it! On behalf of all of us at House Enterprise, we’d like to thank each and every one of you that engages with our content and listens each week. We couldn’t do it without you! For our one year anniversary episode, it was only right to bring back two guests who were with us from the very beginning.

You know Dave Silverman from Episode #2, but mostly from his role as the New England Patriots team photographer.  Dave joins us to reminisce on his stories from shooting some of the greatest football moments of all-time, break down Julian Edelman’s retirement, and relive his experience swimming with sharks in Mexico.

John Fanta - what more can be said? The undisputed #1 Sam Adams fan in New Jersey joins us to crush a few beers and recap the last few months we’ve been apart - after all, John is the only 3-time guest in BBB history!  John catches us up on all his accomplishments in the college basketball world - from being the youngest Play-by-Play Announcer on the FOX Sports roster this year, to covering the NCAA Tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indiana, John has been quite the well-traveled figure this year. We also break down the Cleveland sports scene; the Browns’ rise to the top, and the Indians’ uncertain future ahead.

Episode 46 (April 8, 2021): Kim Anderson, Creator and Co-Founder of Plant City Providence

Episode 46 (April 8, 2021): Kim Anderson, Creator and Co-Founder of Plant City Providence

BEERS: With baseball back and in full swing, Will reviews Pinstripe Pils by Blue Point Brewing Company. With a can decked out in Yankee pinstripes, it’s hard not to picture yourself at the stadium crushing a few light beers. Jake reviews a collaboration from Revival Brewing Company and Union Station Brewery after visiting their new location on Sims Street in Providence.  A blueberry-vanilla sour, Phoenix Rising is a must-have in the Rhode Island area if you like sours.

BUSINESS: Kim Anderson, the founder of plant-based restaurant and marketplace Plant City, joins us to discuss what she is building in Providence and beyond.  Plant City started as an idea: what if plant-based eating was an experience, rather than a diet or fad?  Now, Plant City has become one of the fastest-growing entities in New England; they’ve served 700,000 guests in their 2 years of existence, saved 361 million gallons of water and 300,000 animal lives - all while sourcing their ingredients locally.  We discuss Kim’s drive to make the world a better place while being able to turn a profit, and why every entrepreneur must have a degree of social responsibility.

BALLS: The NCAA tournament like no other has come to a close.  What did we learn, who surprised us, and what’s next?  The guys are loving UCLA and what’s to come, and recap their historic run.  In other news, baseball!  Opening Week started off with a bang - the Reds’ Nick Castellanos was ejected and suspended after having some choice words with a Cardinals pitcher, Detroit’s Akil Baddoo made an incredible splash in his MLB debut, and the White Sox’s Yermin Mercedes started the year going 8 for 8.  Did Eloy Jimenez die, or are the White Sox just beyond extra? We also give some betting favorites for The Masters, scheduled to tee off on Thursday morning.

Episode 45 (March 17, 2021): Captain Xavier and Sam Basel, March Madness Breakdown

Episode 45 (March 17, 2021): Captain Xavier and Sam Basel, March Madness Breakdown

MARCH MADNESS IS BACK! We officially have a bracket, so there’s no better way to break it down than with Twitter’s favorite college basketball personality, Captain Xavier.  We also bring in our House writer (see what we did there?), Sam Basel, who’s been killing it all year covering the A-10 and NYC-area college hoops for us.  Cap is sad about the brutal end to the season for the Musketeers, who were bounced in the first round of the Big East tournament by Butler - but he’s very much looking forward to making some wild predictions for this year’s Big Dance.  We discuss our initial reactions to the bracket, which #1 seed has the easiest path to the Final Four, and which Big East team is most likely to make a run at the title.  We also give our traditional Bracket Buster pick, and add in our “psycho picks” - the upsets that no one will see coming. We end with Cap’s Mount Rushmore of College Basketball Twitter personalities.

BEERS: The guys recap a trip to northern New Hampshire, which is one of the most densely-populated states for breweries in the nation.  They first break down their visit to New Hampshire Wine & Liquor Outlet - a total tourist trap, but cheap beer and wine will always be a must-hit.  Will, who just hit 1,000 unique beers on UnTappd, celebrates with a 6-glass flight at One Love Brewery in Lincoln, NH.   Mixed vibes for sure - a garden meets a sports bar, but their beer was right in the middle of the road. Jake reviews a New Hampshire selection from Woodstock Inn Brewery called “Old Man Oatmeal Stout,” which he paired with a few Short Rib Tacos outside at the makeshift “igloos'' on the patio.  He thinks it was a nice, easygoing craft choice for a colder day, but might reach for something else if offered.

BUSINESS: Introducing LeRedSox!  LeBron James and his business partner Maverick Carter have reportedly bought a $6 million stake in Fenway Sports Group, the holding company that owns the Boston Red Sox. Many believe this is LeBron’s first step towards owning a professional team of his own. How involved will LeBron be with the Crimson Hose?  We also discuss Elon Musk’s latest escapade: changing his official title to TechnoKing, and dragging his CFO into the fire with him as the new “Master of Coin.” Genius or sorcery?

Episode 44 (March 11, 2021): Adam White, CEO and Founder of Front Office Sports

Episode 44 (March 11, 2021): Adam White, CEO and Founder of Front Office Sports

Email is traditionally not the “sexy” way to start a product, but if you ask Front Office Sports Founder & CEO Adam White, it’s what makes him who he is. Adam joins the show to divulge how he built a titan social media presence around the $615 billion business of sports. We discuss the origins of FOS, all the way from when he was a student at Miami...working as a teachers assistant and at a bar to pay the bills. Now, with FOS being named to Fast Co.’s Most Innovative Companies, Adam lays out what he believes is next for the future of sports media, content creation, and the business of sports. We get Adam’s thoughts on NBA Top Shot and other NFT’s, his early March Madness predictions, and his predicament with rooting for Phoenix-based teams. Adam is with us for both Business & Balls this week.

BEER: Will somehow thought it’d be a good idea to have a beer that has coconut and pineapple, two flavors that he’s not keen for. While Kokoanana wasn’t for him, he can appreciate that anything Long Live Beerworks makes is an objectively good beer. Jake reviews M-43 by Old Nation Brewing Company - this nice NEIPA selection made its way to the Ocean State a few months ago. If you’re lucky, you can find this gem at Thirsty Beaver Cranston & Smithfield.
