A show looking to tell stories that ask or answer the following about communities: Where are they a leading example of things done right? What should they change to be a leading example for others moving forward? Where are they a leading indicator for social, political, and lifestyle trends? It's producers and many of it's stories hail from the midwestern gem that is Cincinnati, Ohio, but the show is definitely not just for citizens of the Queen City. While looking for bellwether trends in their own communities, these stories are often a microcosm for our wider culture.

how it’s gotta be

Josh & Leyla strike an easy rapport in the first two episodes of Bellwether. They enthusiastically present 30-minute distillations of what must be hours and hours of material. As a transplant to Cincinnati, the moment in Episode 1 that first struck me was Josh’s description of the show’s namesake - the moment on Election Night 2012 when Hamilton County’s turning “blue” corresponded with all of Ohio tipping toward Obama electorally. Cincinnati is a unique microcosm of a unique country, and it’s easy to forget that when you live here - just as it’s easy to forget that there are places where your vote matters when you live in a place like my hometown, Chicago. For these reasons Bellwether will be a treasure for locals, reminding them of how darn special Cincinnati is, and a singular insight for outsiders looking in.
