A podcast by two art history nerds who needed an outlet to talk about art!

Ep 46 - Unpacking Indiana Jones (Movie Night!)

Ep 46 - Unpacking Indiana Jones (Movie Night!)

We watched Indiana Jones so you don't have to. What can be said about a bizarrely outdated movie series that capitalizes on the treasure hunting of acclaimed archeologists? It belongs in the trash. In this George Lucas creation, Dr. Henry Walton Jones, Jr—"Indiana" Jones, to all—is a tenured professor who fights Nazis and grades term-papers, traveling the world to collect rare, priceless artifacts to quell his own obsessions and fill his university's museum collection. Men will literally become fluent in the dialect and customs of a remote Himalayan tribe and retrieve sacred stones instead of going to therapy.

Scared of snakes and not much else, join your BYWAP hosts as we get very loosey-goosey and yell about it all.

Find out why "it belongs in a museum!" doesn't always dissuade your enemies; contemplate how a Near-Death Experience can help heal the rift between father and son; listen to Stephanie and Elene yell about the racist and glaring plot-holes that come about watching four movies over one weekend; and, groan in dismay knowing that we're still waiting on the fifth Indian Jones movie to be free from this hell.

Ep 45 - Graphic Design in Propaganda

Ep 45 - Graphic Design in Propaganda

So, when we sat down to record this episode last Tuesday, we thought we were being clever and productive with our time. These two art history nerds from the past could not have imagined that the same week they were going to record an episode about Propaganda there would be an attempted coup on the U.S Capitol building. The whole Trump Train Propaganda Machine was right there! And we didn't acknowledge it! Because we thought it would be kicking a dead horse. Instead, armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol during the middle of a global pandemic. Anyways.

Find out how the US should get an honorary doctorate for being a propaganda machine; listen to two babies—oblivious of time and impending terrorism—talk about war and liberty; contemplate how aesthetic choices impact the subconscious better than we could have ever imagined; and, learn about the various symbols that have been used for hope and oppression for decades.

Ep 44 - Yayoi Kusama: Finding Infinity in Polka Dots

Ep 44 - Yayoi Kusama: Finding Infinity in Polka Dots

We’ve rocked around the Christmas tree, we’ve opened our presents, and now we sit—desperate and ready to pop champagne and say “sayonara!” to 2020. However, before we dive into the new year, we here at BYWAP couldn’t help ourselves and we had to share some together to sing the praises and bemoan the tragedies of the incredible artist: Yayoi Kusama. Queen of polka dots and Master of Infinity (Rooms), she has been celebrated and praised in the contemporary for being an #instagramable artist.... but, she is so much more than that!

Join us as we say goodbye to 2020 with hearts full of joy, contemplate how decades of trauma can affect the human condition, become obsessed with Kusama and her polka dots, and advocate for affordable and accessible mental health care.

    Ep 42 - Artworld Shenanigans I: COVID-19 Updates

    Ep 42 - Artworld Shenanigans I: COVID-19 Updates

Wow! December? Already? We've done COVID Updates several times this year (in April & August), and in the spirit of every 4 months, we'd like to give 2020 one last update to see where things are going. Thankfully, the news is a touch more promising on the virus-side of things with the roll-out of vaccines! However, there is always the darker side of these festivities and frolicking. Please stay safe.

Find out how some museums are trying to use their collections to bankroll employees; contemplate briefly on how street art impacts the value of real estate; reflect of fabulous re-discoveries that make Art Historians wet; bemoan government neglect and abuse in so many of its forms; and not mention the monoliths popping over the world because it's just exhausting and we're tired and It's Just Art.

Ep 41 - An Adventure in Urban Conservation (w/ Tamro!)

Ep 41 - An Adventure in Urban Conservation (w/ Tamro!)

We live in a society: architecture edition. Your BYWAP hosts are back at it again, with domestic architecture expert Tamro, investigating the history of cities. When did people start to see the value in urban architecture, and when did conserving it become a priority? In today's episode, we dive into the foundation of the cities and places that make up daily life—but in an Architecture Nerd sort of way!

Reminisce on how problematic the 20th century REALLY was; dive into the challenges that come about trying to preserve the past to keep it for the future; listen to two Georgians talk about Georgia (the country!); and, finally, contemplate how the Creative City and Modern City archetypes are just a continuation of centuries of Urban Conservation.

Slowking Princess ,

I love it!

Funny, and not too serious, it’s a fantastic way to follow along with art/museum trends without having to fight through a lot of jargon. The hosts have a great dynamic and I love the new weekly episode structure!

I feel like I’m listening to old friends chat back in college. Gives me all the warm nostalgic feelings and I learn something!
