Weekly sermons by Elder Michael Gowens and others from the pulpit of Bethel PBC, Calabash, NC.
Learning Theology in Life
In this 2/14/21 sermon, Elder Michael Gowens leads the congregation in a study of Psalm 31. This Psalm of David illustrates the principle that much can be learned about God by the child of God via the experiences of life. The Psalm speaks of fearing God, trusting God, loving God and hoping in God. It was in the trials of life that David learned that God is trustworthy and worthy to be loved for His goodness.
The Grace & Duty of Spiritual Mindedness
Elder Gowens' 2/7/21 message is taken from Romans 8:5-9. Of course, man by nature is earthly-, not spiritually-minded. Spiritual-mindedness, therefore, is first a gift of God's grace. Once an individual has been born from above, however, the development of a spiritual mind is a duty, as Colossians 3:1ff indicates: "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things that are above...Set your affection on things above, not on things of this earth."
All Roads Lead to Romans
Elder Gowens' 1/24/21 message is an attempt to offer a brief overview of Paul's epistle to the Romans. This sermon covers the themes of Sin and Grace as developed in chapters 1 - 5.
The Grateful Leper
Elder Gowens delivered a Thanksgiving sermon on 11/22/2020, from Luke 17:11-19. This familiar story speaks powerfully to the hearts of those who have come to see the leprosy of sin in the heart, and the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus to remedy the malady. To all who feel gratitude for the gift of God's amazing grace. may the account of the grateful leper be the incentive to return to give thanks in public worship and a life of obedience.
King Asa: The God-Seeker
The 11/15/2020 sermon by Michael Gowens is based on 2 Chronicles 14-16. In this first message of a study on the Godly Kings of Judah, Gowens first looks at Asa personally, as a man of godly character, then at the godly influence of his reign upon the nation. Finally he considers and important practical lesson from the latter years of Asa's life. In a day when godly leadership is rare, Asa's example has much to teach us about the importance of holding such a position of influence.
Jesus is Savior
In this 12/13/2020 message, Elder Michael Gowens considers the most beloved of our Lord's names: the name "Jesus." Pastor Gowens highlights three important facts relative to this precious name: (1) The Source of the Name; (2) The Significance of the Name; (3) The Sweetness of the Name. Open to Matthew 1:21 to follow Brother Gowens in this sublime study.
