A treasure trove of insight

At a time when critical thinking and academia in general are under attack from without and within, this series provides a treasure trove of insight to listeners frustrated by the wasteland of today’s media.

The beliefs and arguments of dozens of the world’s deep thinkers, on a vast range of important subjects, are archived in this, the most intellectually stimulating podcast I’ve yet come across. In fact, I discovered Big Ideas several years ago and employed it then as my companion on long bicycle rides in the Oakland hills. Robert Adams’s soaring oratory got me up many a steep hill.

I’ve just rediscovered this podcast and from my 2018 perspective can look back at episode from nearly a decade ago and in many cases marvel at its prescience. I look forward to hearing some episodes for the first time, and re-hearing ones I’ve played before and recall with great fondness, not just for their academic rigor, but also for the beauty of their construction and delivery.

How unfortunate that such a gem languishes in the anonymous archives of TVO. I suggest the CBC acquire Big Ideas and feature it in its current podcast lineup, describing it for what it is: a national treasure.
