There's a very thin line between Southern Soul and the blues. Southern Soul has managed to move the genre forward in unexpected ways, updating the sound while keeping true to the rhythms, cadences and feels of traditional blues. Cooki B and Tonya explore some of the sounds of southern soul from old school players like Tyrone Davis and Sir Charles to the new school like J Wonn and Calvin Richardson. Then they're joined by special guest Courtney Little - Mr. "Cougar Hunter" himself. The man behind the the unexpected viral hit. It was a time! Have a listen.

Preston Lauterbach, music journalist and author of Beale Street Dynasty, is also the author of The Chitlin Circuit: And the Road to Rock 'n" Roll, where he explores the origins of rock-and-roll in Black culture, specifically Black/Delta blues culture. Cooki B and Tonya talk to him about his book, the artists and songs that served as a springboard for rock music and of course Robert Johnson. Often classified as second tier, the Chitlin Circuit birthed and nurtured some of our country's most renowned musicians and singers whether directly or indirectly! 

The blues has been more often than not about being "down bad." But there's some love in the mix! Maybe not ordinary or traditional love. But there IS love in the blues too. And your Blues Sistas are talking about it. Tune in!

Blues is the Basement is back with Cooki B and new host, Ms. Tonya D! The season opened at Suga Shack in front of a live audience featuring a high energy BIG MEMPHIS performance and interview with Al Kapone/Al Kapeezy. He's not just a rapper but a blues lover too!  He is creating his own lane with hip hop blues and it's a game changer. He's doing his part to keep the music going! We know no one can fill The Pilot's - Malvin Massey - shoes but we can keep the music, his memory and his legacy alive.
