Melissa cared for her husband and five children after his disabling episode, but as a strong Black woman, we see the reaction of the medical professionals, guardians, and media as she advocates for Michael. She experiences tremendous loss and is then victimized again by those who should have been supporting her. Not only did Michael Hickson deserve better, but Melissa Hickson deserved better, too.
