Ep. 15 - Bruce Reed | Founder Of Bruster's Ice Cream

Ep. 15 - Bruce Reed | Founder Of Bruster's Ice Cream

Bruster’s Real Ice Cream was founded in 1989 by Bruce Reed, whose passion for fresh, high-quality food and stellar customer service runs deep. Bruce’s father, Jerry Reed, opened the legendary Jerry’s Curb Service in Bridgewater, PA, in 1947 after completing a tour of service in the U.S. Air Force. The quintessential carhop remains a staple in the Pittsburgh area. Inspired by his father’s success, Bruce searched for a complementary business to open on the land adjacent to his family’s carhop restaurant. After carefully crafting his rich and creamy ice cream recipe, he opened the first Bruster’s for his sister to run. Before long, Bruster’s became the neighborhood’s favorite ice cream store, and Bruce started franchising to friends and family in 1993. He was eager to make Bruster’s available nationwide. Under the management of CEO Jim Sahene, Bruster’s now operates and franchises a chain of more than 215 walk-up ice cream stores located in the eastern United States.

Ep. 14 - Bill Sarris | Sarris Candies | The World's Best Chocolates

Ep. 14 - Bill Sarris | Sarris Candies | The World's Best Chocolates

Sarris Candies is a staple in the chocolate industry around Pittsburgh. Started by Frank Sarris in his basement in 1960, it has since grown to multiple locations throughout western Pennsylvania. The business is now run by Frank’s son, Bill Sarris.

With Frank’s passing in March 2010, his son, Bill, now serves as CEO of the company and has taken the experience and expertise handed down from his father to continue the legacy of Sarris Candies. From 1978 through 1996, Sarris Candies underwent nine major additions and expansions to its retail store and factory that assisted in transforming the company from a local business into a corporate empire.  In addition, Bill negotiated Sarris Candies’ acquisition of Gardners Candies, a family owned chocolate company in Central Pennsylvania, in 1997, to further increase Sarris production capacity and outreach.  Bill successfully reestablished Gardners Candies as an entity in Central Pennsylvania, and Sarris and Gardners now work together simultaneously in efficiently manufacturing and distributing product nationwide.  Alongside his mother, Athena, and with the help of other family members, including his sister and brother-in-law, Sophia and Steve Heon, and his daughters, Athena Sarris-Simms and Candace Sarris, Bill continues to position the company to move forward.  While focusing on growth in several areas, the Sarris family maintains the old fashioned values and customer service standards set by the company’s founder. As Bill expands the company into new markets and avenues of sales, he wants to continue to cultivate the image of mom and pop as the company matures, and he is one of the few that has been successful in marrying cult appeal with scale in growing the Sarris brand.

Today the company offers its fundraising programs to local schools and churches and a number of groups and athletic teams.  Along with a generous profit structure, Sarris Candies donates an endless array of product and financial sponsorship to those participating organizations for numerous other fundraising events as well.  With more and more of these groups losing funding sources, Sarris is pushing into the fringes of our traditional service areas, reaching out to provide fundraising opportunities to groups in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and beyond.

As fundraising areas expand, the retail division closely follows, pushing into new territories to feature the most popular items in retail outlets throughout the area.  Sarris Candies can now be found in over 1,800 locations in more than 11 states.

The Sarris mail order business that began with the publication of the first catalog in 1985, has grown in many directions over the years, currently leading faithful Sarris customers to an expanding website, making access to Sarris chocolates possible worldwide.

Corporate sales feature a sophisticated array of gifts that hundreds of companies send to their customers, associates and employees each year to impress or say “Thank You.”  Personal attention to detail and customization is what makes Sarris stand out.

Ep. 12 - Bill Brown | Tree Farms To Treatment Centers

Ep. 12 - Bill Brown | Tree Farms To Treatment Centers

The entrepreneur spirit runs deep in Bill's family. Beginning with his grandparents, who had several businesses and made strategic investments with land, specifically farms. His grandmothers love for scotch pines is what motivated Bill to take the evergreen business to the next level. He would go on to purchase more land, at one point having 12 farms throughout Central PA. With great success in the evergreen business Bill began another business venture "Firetree Ltd." with Allen Ertle. These facilities provide Drug & Alcohol treatments to those associated with the criminal justice system throughout Pennsylvania and Upstate New York. Bill also manages a variety of real estate assets and car dealerships which were founded by his grandfather.

Ep. 11 - Blaise Alexander | Takin' Deals The Other Guys Won't

Blaise Alexander, a native of Centralia PA, attended Mount Carmel Area High School and the Indiana Institute of Technology where he studied Mechanical Engineering. Blaise grew up working with his father, Aubrey, at Alexander & Son's in Atlas, PA. His first professional experience outside the family business was as a used car manager for a dealership in State College, PA. In August 1980, Blaise moved his young family to Montoursville, PA where he opened the doors to his first dealership, Blaise Alexander Chevrolet.

Over the past 40 years, through recession and economy rebound, the dealership footprint quickly grew spanning across Pennsylvania. The Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships extend north to south from Mansfield, PA on the New York boarder to Greencastle, PA on the Maryland boarder and east to west from Philipsburg, PA to Hazleton, PA on Interstate 81.

Now, with 21 dealerships supplying 15 vehicle brands, five Blaise Alexander Collision Centers, commercial truck sales, and a car wash, Blaise still says he has achieved these goals by focusing on customer experience and the community.
