#22: “When the Oncologist gets Cancer” The Doctor as Patient with Dr. Reema Batra BS Free MD with Drs. May and Tim Hindmarsh

    • Medicine

What if you became the patient of the very thing you fought? Hear this amazing story from Dr. Reema Batra, our guest this week in our 3rd installment in our series of “The Doctor as Patient”. Dr. Batra is a Board Certified Medical Oncologist and Hematologist. Her story is not only ironic but provides a unique perspective, having recently been diagnosed and treated for early stage breast cancer. She graciously shares the events that led to fortunate early diagnosis, her unique ability to advocate for her own treatment plan and how she dealt with the  emotional struggles. Now having experienced what her patients face, she knows firsthand their uncertainties and fears. Literally walking  in their shoes has provided a shared bond and ability to offer unique support for them through their journey. More about Dr Batra: She has been practicing since 2007. Initially she worked in the academic setting at NYU focusing on cancer care and healthcare disparities. She led a project to start a Breast Care Center at Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. In 2012 she moved to San Diego and works with an underserved population. She has worked hard to maintain the NAPBC accreditation at her affiliated hospital, Sharp Grossmont Hospital. She stresses the treatment of the “patient as a whole” and believes that outside of the exam room is where the difference is made in a patient’s long term outcome. She is also a wife and mother and loves to run. Thanks to our sponsor this week is Panacea Financial. Don’t forget to reach out to them for physician or medical student loans.
