Speaking on Business: Utah Entrepreneur Challenge

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business.

The Utah Entrepreneur Challenge (UEC) is a statewide, student business model competition held at the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute. Any college student or team of students can enter the challenge with a business idea by submitting an application on the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute’s website.

Teams from universities across the state will go head-to-head with startup ideas competing for a chance to win $60,000 in cash and prizes based on the winning business model. Participating teams are judged by industry professionals and community experts. In addition to the grand prize, there are also additional prizes granted for best business model, presentation and technology.

Many past winners have developed into successful enterprises. The competition is open to all university students in Utah. Younger students, ages 14-18, are encouraged to complete in the High School Utah Entrepreneur Challenge as well for a chance to win $25,000 in prizes. The program is managed by the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute and sponsored by Zions Bank.

The 2020-21 application deadline for the Challenge will be open Nov. 20, 2020, at noon to Feb. 8, 2021, at midnight. This is a great opportunity to test your idea and refine your pitch to potential investors. For those interested, the public and special guests will be able to attend the final showcase and awards ceremony later in the spring.

Speaking on Business: Summit Sotheby's International

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. The real estate market remains strong and is one of the few sectors that is doing really well during this pandemic period. Thomas Wright, President and Principal Broker at Summit Sotheby’s International Realty, details how they’ve innovated to meet the demands of the current market.

    THOMAS WRIGHT

At Summit Sotheby's International Realty, we took steps early on to put the health and safety of our employees and clients first. We have been able to return most employees back to work by being creative and following CDC guidelines. We’re offering multiple options to continue to help our clients buy and sell real estate in new, innovative ways that include wiping down homes after showings, encouraging virtual showings, when possible, and giving our clients a touchless document signing experience. As always, we’re focused on providing all of our clients a luxury real estate experience, regardless of price point. Summit Sotheby's International Realty has remained active in the community. We are proactively supporting nonprofit partners working to address supporting the arts to food insecurity due to the consequences of job losses. As Utah’s leading real estate brokerage, we will continue to help the community in any way we can.

    Speaking on Business: UAEC Pathways

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business.

The pandemic has disrupted not only our work lives but shifted demand for specific jobs across our state. One industry that continues to thrive in Utah is the construction industry and those who support construction. This year 8,400 construction jobs were added in the state and every year there is a need to fill an average of 5,000 new jobs.

To help high school graduates enter this field and earn a certificate toward an exciting new career Utah has the UAEC pathway program. The Utah Architectural, Engineering and Construction Pathway is a Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) career-based curriculum geared toward students interested in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) field. The capstone experience is placement as an intern with a local AEC company, benefiting student learners and solving the labor shortages in the construction industry.

Careers in this industry provide sustainable employment. If you are a high school graduate interested in buildings, design and how parts and pieces go together; or if you want a high-paying, high-potential rewarding career, you might consider this option.

These are occupations with a high degree of security and stability as you grow into project management, interior design, or working as an electrician, or architect. The UAEC slogan is dream it, design it, build it. In this way can help create a more sustainable future in our state.

    Speaking on Business: Peczuh Printing

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Steve Pilkington, Executive Vice President of Peczuh Printing, is here to explain how they are keeping up with the various demands of print and packaging during the pandemic.

    STEVE PILKINGTON

With three manufacturing facilities in Utah (Price, Salt Lake City and Lindon), we understand the importance of an efficient and well-coordinated operating plan. One of the key components is our commitment to ensuring the success of our customers and their businesses, even with the occasional “impossible schedule” requirements. We are built to be responsive and flexible.

While we do have a small number of employees that are able to work remotely, the majority of our associates are required to be physically present. Employee safety is of the utmost importance to us, thus we implemented a universal face mask policy, increased sanitizing of workstations and equipment, and social distance as much as each operation will allow.

We are focused on things that will enable us to be viable now and in the future. We found it necessary to increase our equipment mix to ensure that we meet the requirements of a very diverse customer base. One of our most intriguing endeavors is maintaining a high level of craftsmanship while embracing the rapidly changing technological advancements in print and packaging.
