#19-Stefan Sobkowiak: Our biggest mistakes in Permaculture

#19-Stefan Sobkowiak: Our biggest mistakes in Permaculture

Stefan Sobkowiak operates a 12 acre farm of which 6-acres are in a permaculture orchard at Miracle Farms in Quebec. Sobkowiak originally bought the farm as a conventional 12 acre 4,000 tree monoculture apple orchard and immediately transitioned it to organic, but he quickly realized that an organic monoculture merely substitutes inputs from the conventional model. The alternative he created is a diverse polyculture that produces a wide variety of different fruits, berries and perennial herbs for u-pick membership customers. Sobkowiak is also an avid teacher, having taught at the university level and now popularly, through his Permaculture Orchard video, his online virtual orchard tour and his online pruning course.

A great philosophical permaculture podcast

If you’re looking for a cookie cutter podcast that is all fun and rainbows about cute chickens and big carrots look elsewhere. The discussions go deeper than just tips on how to grow your own food with the permaculture strategy. These are discussions about a movement to better this planet and better human life. The discussions can challenge your views and make you questions your current beliefs which I think is an important way for self growth and self improvement. The host interviews interesting and knowledgeable people in their field. The discussions around the philosophy of being self sustainable in this curious and sometimes terrible world is very empowering and enlightening.

Great information!

I consume hours of podcasts a week due to my job and this quickly became one of my top 3 to listen to. I’ve been a avid gardener/homesteader for years and Todd around the idea of market gardening. This has given me a lot of great information if I decided to do that.

Come for the permaculture, stay for the anti-vac propaganda

I tried this podcast out hoping for some advice on my food forest. Maybe I just came in for the wrong episode, but in the episode I listened to the host literally told a conspiracy theorist, don’t bother talking about evidence, get to the conspiracy theory part. What followed was a permaculture free rant on the government forcing experimental drugs on us and a bunch of 1984 references. Admittedly I didn’t stick around long enough to see how things turned out, maybe the other episodes are great. Your mileage may vary.
