Mitchell Beaupre ,

Always a great time!

One of my favorite podcasts. Ryan and Kevin clearly have a great friendship, as they invite you in to experience what feels like two pals just talking about movies, and you get to be a part of the fun. Wonderful guests, and an excellent concept that helps this stand out from all the other film podcasts out there.

A Show About Blockbusters that Hates J Cameron

This show has always been too long but I’ve appreciated it for the most part until now.
For about 20 minutes we hear yet more talk about the recent Oscars. Host Ryan McQuade is ubiquitous on podcasts covering awards so I and I’m sure other listeners have heard his takes at least five times.

What really drove me up the wall were Ryan’s venomous attacks against James Cameron. It was just too much (maybe there was even some projection about narcissism). I don’t know. I understand people don’t like Cameron. But I despise cynical reasons and ones where the hater makes themself out to be somehow better than those who do like Cameron. There’s a self-righteous tone in Ryan’s takes in general. But until now I’ve largely appreciated him even when disagreeing with him.

Cameron’s do ms have given me a lot of cinematic highs and McQuade’s reasons for hating him are pretty superficial and as mean spirited as he insists Cameron is.

I appreciated the thoughts of the other hosts and occasionally McQuade admits some good points about Titanic. It’s sad that he dismisses what Cameron does for women and action. He ignores that Ripley in Aliens needs no romance. He forgets Sarah Conner’s journey in the Terminator films or Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio’s powerful performance in The Abyss.

He didn’t care about all the people dying except for Leo. Yet I cried for the others falling from the ship into the abyss and so did millions of other audience members. So that’s not on Cameron that’s on McQuade. He has closed himself off from Cameron’s films because he presumes to know the man.

*It may sound like I worship Cameron but I don’t. Ever since Avatar he’s been uninteresting to me but that does not negate what came before.
