Cool for a Californian
I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts and California is overlooked a lot in them, which surprises me, because it is such a huge state with a lot of interesting crime stories. I was pleased to find this podcast because I am a native Californian and am enjoying hearing about something other than the Night Stalker and Zodiac Killer (which seem to be the only true crime stories about California anyone outside California knows).
I started with Season 1 and am binging (of course), and while the hosts tend to get sidetracked, it’s still enjoyable. (UPDATED— SEE BELOW).
I agree with another reviewer here about the lack of knowledge of Southern California geography though. Guys, come on, if you’re going to include information about an area, at least get it right.
In general, not as polished as other true crime podcasts, but still has value.
Also, one last thing. Really? You’ve never heard of Al Jolson or The Jazz Singer?? Broaden your movie history horizons. /facepalm
***EDIT: okay, now that I’ve listened to a couple seasons and some of the current episodes. The podcast sort of improved over time, however, they really need to:
1) Get away from relying too much on tv shows made about the cases for their research and their knowledge of criminal investigation. That is just a poor researching method, and
2) Get away from speculation. If they did better research, they wouldn’t need to speculate so much about what they think happened, or should have happened. There are some cases they say they don’t have information on, yet I’ve heard podcast episodes about the same cases on other podcasts that feature a *wealth* of well-researched information that removes any need for speculation on the part of these podcasters on these same cases. Which just goes back to their lack of thorough research skills, and
3) oh my gosh, they really need to look into correct pronunciation of street names and cities. They’ve incorrectly said the names of so many streets (and a few cities) that I am familiar with and I really wonder how they manage to mess these things up when other true crime podcasters don’t. This goes back to their poor researching and geography knowledge of anything in Southern California. (Some of the things they say and speculate about the area are absolutely incorrect and I’m wondering what their sources are).
California’s best
As a true crime fan and native California resident born and raised this podcast checks all my marks. This podcast is so well researched and informative definitely a recommendation from me.
