After ten years since their last podcast, Liz and Jamie are back with banter from the cockpit! followtheboat is one of the oldest and biggest personal sailing blogs, documenting the adventures of Jamie, Liz and Millie the Cat aboard their boat, s/y Esper. They have a growing youtube channel with 60,000 subscribers, but their foray into audio/visual content started with their podcasts. These audio delights covered their passage from Turkey to India, taking in Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan, Yemen and Oman. These were treacherous waters, not least because the passage was made when piracy was at its most dangerous. Guaranteed Reasons Why Your Cruising Dreams Will Fail

    Guaranteed Reasons Why Your Cruising Dreams Will Fail

    [S04E25] We reckon there are at least seven reasons why your cruising dreams will fail.

    In this podcast we elaborate on those reasons, and explain in more detail what you need to think about before jumping onto your own boat. We hope if you are a would-be cruiser, you will find our insights useful in your decision to untie the lines.

    And, by the way, this isn’t any old random list we’ve plucked from the air, it’s based on what we have witnessed since we began sailing and cruising in 2005.

    Our friends, Salty Lass, have a great example of why newbies give up…

    An acquaintance of ours bought a boat to live the dream.As he sailed into our anchorage, we watched him find a good spot, then toss the anchor and some chain off the front. He give us a wave and retreated below.

    That night the wind shifted and became a Force 6, soon picking up to a Force 10. This meant the anchorage was untenable, so we re-anchored, but our acquaintance ended up on the rocks. It took both the local harbour master and the RNLI to pull him off to safety. Everything was fine, because he was insured so was able to have his boat fixed. He then sailed it home and sold it!

    These days he travels on the UK inland waterways and rivers in a small motor cruiser.

    Sourcing Boat Parts in Remote Places

    Sourcing Boat Parts in Remote Places

    [S04E24] Sourcing boat parts in remote places is something all cruisers should be thinking about.

    You’re anchored off a remote island in a faraway country and you’ve had a system failure, what do you do? How do you source an engine part? Maybe you’ve run out of fuel for the boat or the dinghy. Has the impeller crumbled, and do you have a replacement? Has the autopilot given up?

    Now imagine you’re running out of water and are low on food basics. You are somewhere with no phone or internet access and there’s no-one ashore. How did it get to this? What do you do? What should you have done?

    Animals on Boats | Good and Bad

    Animals on Boats | Good and Bad

    [S04E23] There will always be animals on boats, whether you want them there or not. To live on a boat means living with nature: on land in the sea and in the air. Some are friendlier than others and will make your life better. Some won’t…

    Sailors over the centuries have often gone to sea with animals on boats. Yes, they were used as ratters and to eat. But they were also there as pets. With wives, children and dear ones left behind, monkeys, cats, dogs and birds became the companions of those old sailors.

    6 Tips For Stress-free Cruising and Sailing

    6 Tips For Stress-free Cruising and Sailing

    [S04E22] This week we’re giving away 6 tips for stress-free cruising. These are the things that make long-term cruising life a happier and more comfortable experience. We’re NOT talking about sail plans, types of sailboat, navigation, understanding the weather or sailing techniques.

    Can you diagnose a fault with the engine if it breaks down in a remote area and you’re on your own? Did you know that some engines are easier and quicker to repair and maintain?

    And what about your dinghy, can you lift it with its outboard motor attached? Sometimes you have to get it as far away from the water as possible, do you have good wheels on yours? We say that it’s good practice to always hoist it at night and to not rely on an anchor alarm.

    As in life, apply the KISS rule for stress-free cruising…

    In this podcast, we also talk about the importance of good anchoring technique and reliable ground tackle. Get it right and you’ll have stress-free cruising. We also explain why we always prefer to anchor rather than to take a mooring.

    * Losing our autopilot

    * Hand-steering for 1000 miles

    * Losing our foresail

    * Rescuing turtles

    * Catching a booby

    * Piracy

    * Breaking the main outhaul

    * Sailing through non-stop storms for days

    * Sailing through lightning

    * Handling two-hour watches

    Hand-steering 1350 miles from Maldives To Malaysia

    Jamie wrote a daily account of our log entries for the crossing on our blog, “Hand-steering 1350 miles from Maldives To Malaysia”, click the image.

    Before leaving the Maldives, we were blown off-course when a Force 8 storm came from nowhere and knocked us down. It raged for days as we struggled to find shelter in Male. Jamie’s added a blog post about our fight to get back, just click the image above.
