The Death of Ivan Ilyitch is the story of a socially ambitious middle-aged judge who contracts an unexplained and untreatable illness. As Ivan Ilyitch is forced to face the death he fears, he asks himself whether the life he thought was so correct was, in fact, a moral life after all. Written after Tolstoy's religious conversion, the novella is widely considered to be one of his masterpieces. (Summary by Laurie Anne Walden)

Ticks all the right boxes

I have never read Tolstoy's 'The Death of Ivan Ilyich' before, and now that it's been committed to memory via an audio narration, I can imagine perusing it no other way. The story dishes up powerful and poignant emotions that will resonate with its audience as the unfortunate Ilyich comes to terms with his impending demise. Only a master novelist like Tolstoy could have dealt with such a subject in such a provocative but tender way.

Laurie Anne Walden's delivery is clear and excellent... her pacing, pitch and diction are measured and even. She conveys the emotions well, without being overly dramatic.

LibriVox has done a great service by presenting the story as a free podcast to be enjoyed by the public. Overall, the quality is top-notch, and even if this were to be charged as an audio book, it would still be value for money.
