It tells the true story of how Brierley, 25 years after being separated from his family in India, sets out to find them. It is a joint production between Australia and the United Kingdom.

The story follows an abandoned yet defiant girl, Kya, who raises herself to adulthood in a North Carolina marshland, becoming a naturalist in the process. When the town's hotshot is found dead, she is the prime suspect and is tried for murder.

Filming began on August 17, 2009, at Vancouver Film Studios, and finished in late October, with post-production beginning early the following month. Bryce Dallas Howard joins the cast as returning character, Victoria, who was previously portrayed by Rachelle Lefevre in the first two films.
