Simply The Best

My wife and I are 39 year old DINKs (Dual Income No Kids). Had never heard that term until delving into FI. All of these episodes are great and you can always find something relatable. I listened to two of the earlier episodes about food. I went back and did an analysis of our food spending. I was shocked to see that on average we were spending $1,500 on groceries and eating out, for two people. Our highest month was $1,900. It’s embarrassing and it’s been feeding a negative feedback loop where I’ve gained weight and my credit card debt keeps going up and we just feel like we aren’t getting ahead. Listening to the podcasts and doing simple research was an amazingly positive slap in the face. We have immediately worked to pay off two cards which has freed up $588 a month. We cleared out a storage unit filled with junk we didn’t need and that has freed up another $200 a month.
Once I saw the money we wasted on food I stopped eating fast food. Thru the first 20 days of November we’ve spent $500 on food, which still needs improvement, but puts us on track for $750 on the month. This represents a $750+ savings for us. I’ve also dropped 9 pounds just buy switching to more home cooked/prepackaged non fast food.
There is so much low hanging fruit for us to quickly go after and vastly improve our financial security. I am more alert and don’t feel like a corporate drone anymore. I’m not just going to hope to retire at 67 and cross my fingers. Thank you for your simple and relatable information and willingness to experiment and share. I’m looking at a 10 year plan, with my wife, to reach FI at age 49. Thanks again

ChooseFI podcast

I discovered the ChooseFI podcast about nine months ago and it has been life changing. Brad and Jonathan's primary goal is to educate their listeners, so they can lead happier, more fulfilled lives. As a woman who was recently divorced after a nearly 30 year marriage, I had a lot to learn about personal finance. When I was married I relied on my husband to make all the decisions in regard to investments and retirement, not bothering to learn myself, because I thought it was too hard and I thought my husband would take care of me. In hind sight, I had put blinders on, stuck my head in the sand, and ignored warning signs about our relationship. After the divorce, discovering the ChooseFI podcast was a godsend. Over the course of several months I listened to every single episode. It was like a crash course in personal finance. Financial terminology and concepts that had been so difficult to understand before, began to crystalize in my brain.
I learned lots of good tips for cutting expenses and put many into practice. I stopped contributing extra to my mortgage principal and directed that to my 401K and IRA instead. I made changes to the investments in those accounts to minimize fees, and even started investing in VTSAX!. I started contributing to an HSA and am maxing that out as well. I decided I'm going to keep driving my Honda Civic for as long as I can. When you go through a divorce and everything is cut in half, it's a huge adjustment. I am now very concious of what I spend money on. There is still more I need to do, like downsize my house, but taking the actions I have already, has given me a sense of control over my life, and hope for a positive financial future. I feel very empowered and am passing down what I learn to my adult children. They don't always take the advice, but I hope I am planting some seeds.
I can't thank Brad and Jonathan enough, for giving me hope and inspiration, and for empowering me to educate myself and take action, through the information in their podcasts. They are men of faith and good moral character, and I know I can trust their advice. They have a made a difference in my life and I am truly blessed and grateful.
