    • Self-Improvement

Episode 19

Join our hosts Carmen and Sophia Micsa to learn how Brooke Siem went from winning the 'Chopped' competition to writing May Cause Side Effects, a powerful and beautiful memoir about anti-depressant withdrawal. Also, find out how Brooke's mom Dee Barbash played a crucial role in her daughter's healing journey.

Brooke Siem was among the first generation of teens to be medicated with antidepressants. Her debut memoir MAY CAUSE SIDE EFFECTS, was published in September 2022 and was named one of Good Morning America's Most Anticipated Reads. She is also a Food Network "Chopped" champion & author.
Dee Barbash finally followed her calling and became one of fewer than 100 worldwide Compassion Key practitioners who have earned Master Certification in the United States.

Brooke Siem and her mother Dee Barbash offer powerful advice regarding living life with more light and overcoming depression through the right modality of healing:
Compassion Key is a modality of healing that addresses anything that's chronically wrong in one's life & can release the deep wounding. After having won the 'Chopped' competition, Brooke felt that validation that things can change. She also felt a unique joy that she hasn't felt in a long time. Brooke is a firm believer that everything in one's life is changeable and that community, safety, and connections are key to healing. However, the ultimate change has to come from within and you, as the individual, are in charge. On this Seeds of Sunshine episode:
"To live or leave," is Brooke's question! She chose to live & her powerful argument to choose to live over suicide is that by not committing suicide is a radical act of life-saving, since family and friends are more likely to follow. Also, Dee's advice to parents is to not only get the right help for their children but also get help for themselves. Brooke's interviews on Dying to Ask podcast and Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books will also shed more light on her struggle with antidepressant withdrawal.
