A SLEEPER? Rodriguez Series 84 Maduro Torpedo - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

A SLEEPER? Rodriguez Series 84 Maduro Torpedo - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

Rodriguez Cigars isn't a brand I'm all too familiar with, but when I saw the Series 84 Maduro Torpedo in my subscription box from CigarClub.com, I was pretty excited to smoke it.

As soon as I freed the cigar from the cellophane, I could immediately smell something amazing. The aroma of the Rodriguez Series 84 Maduro Torpedo was of leather and rich tobacco, and I was immediately impressed.
After cutting the torpedo end, the draw was perfect. The flavors of the cold draw were reminiscent of whiskey or bourbon. And, after torching the end, the smell of the smoke was quite fantastic. Before I have even tasted the cigar, my hopes are high!

Through the middle of the cigar, the flavors were a combination of leather and milk chocolate with hints of spice.
    Final Thoughts:
I found the Rodriguez Series 84 Maduro Torpedo to be a very pleasant surprise. Other than the crack in the wrapper, this cigar had great construction. Regarding the flavors, I was also surprised at how well this cigar pairs with coffee, after every puff, I could really taste the chocolate notes in my Pinon Coffee.
My main complaint about this cigar is that it didn't last long enough. You should be able to enjoy a cigar of this size for about 90 minutes, but this cigar only lasted for about 60. I wish I'd been able to smoke it for longer. A great cigar, with wonderful flavors, and an enjoyable experience, the Rodriguez Series 84 Maduro Torpedo earns a CigarScore 5.

OLIVA Serie V DOUBLE TORO - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

OLIVA Serie V DOUBLE TORO - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

The Oliva Serie V Double Toro is a cigar my father-in-law has been smoking for years and one that he swears by. And, since I frequently see them on Famous Smoke at 40% off, I bought box when I saw them on sale. So today, instead of just relying on the word of a friend, I thought we'd put the Oliva Serie V Double Toro to the test!
    00:00 Intro
    00:09 Welcome
    02:26 First Impressions
    04:02 Cigar Specs
    04:57 Smoking
    07:32 Final Thoughts
    09:06 Outro
After using my v-cutter to snip the end, I found that I had a fairly tight draw. Regarding the flavors, the Serie V is undeniably Nicaraguan, but the Ecuadorian Habano wrapper adds some spice. However, the spice I get from these cigars like cinnamon, not peppers, so it's a nice combination of sweetness and spice. Additionally, I get notes of leather and other earthy flavors.

Through the first third of the Oliva Serie V Double Toro, I had a tight draw that I didn't like. To fix it, I used my guillotine cutter to try and open up the smoke, but my efforts failed. It looks like I'm going to have to suffer through a tight-ish draw.
    Final Thoughts:
While this wasn't as good as the Oliva Serie V Double Toros I've had in the past, this one was still pretty good. Other than the disappointing draw, this cigar lived up to expectations (and past experiences) in every way.
The Serie V has rich flavors of cinnamon and other spices that are balanced with earthy flavors that make up a really nice smoke. Plus it's hard to ignore the quality and length of smoke for the price, all from a premium cigar brand. The Oliva Serie V Double Toro earns a CigarScore 4.

PADILLA Series 1968 BLACK BEAR Torpedo - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

PADILLA Series 1968 BLACK BEAR Torpedo - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

If you've never heard of Padilla cigars, welcome to the club. Before last year, I'd never heard of the brand that has actually been around and making cigars since 2013.

    10:34 Outro
The Padilla Series 1968 Black Bear Torpedo smells a little green at the onset. After cutting the end, the cold draw flavors were those of very high-proof alcohol, so much so that I wonder if this cigar's tobacco was aged in a whiskey or bourbon barrel.
After torching the end, I was blasted with solid Nicaraguan flavors and shoe leather.

NOTE: In the "wrapper" section above, I have TBD as the state. Some sources say the wrapper is a Broadleaf from Pennsylvania, others say it's from Connecticut.
In the middle of the cigar, the cigar tasted good, but not as smooth or as complex as a more premium, aged cigar. The flavors were spicey, I could taste cedar, and, occasionally, I could smell (but not taste) a little bit of vanilla.
    Final Thoughts:
In the final third, the flavors of the Padilla Series 1968 Black Bear became a little bit harsh as the cigar heated up. However, even though the cigar didn't remain as good in the end as it started, the flavors were still pretty good.
Because of the Padilla Black Bear's price, I think this cigar is worth taking a chance on. For the most part, the construction of the cigar was great. The draw was perfect and I never struggled to get enough smoke.  For these reasons, the Padilla Series 1968 Black Bear Torpedo earns a CigarScore 3.

OVER RATED? The Drew Estate Liga UNDERCROWN SHADE Gran Toro - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

OVER RATED? The Drew Estate Liga UNDERCROWN SHADE Gran Toro - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

In our search for the best cigars to pair with coffee, I stumbled upon the Drew Estate Liga Undercrown Shade, a cigar I've seen a lot of people talking about, but one I have yet to try.
After pulling the Undercrown Shade out of the cellophane and giving it a big sniff, I could smell wheat and grass. Not green grass, but grass that's been aging under the sun for a few days.

With a punch, the draw was perfect, and I could taste Grape Nuts cereal. After torching the end, unlike the Sobremesa Brulee, the Undercrown Shade was not sweet, though it does have lots of flavor and not a hint of pepper.

Through the middle of the cigar, the flavors remained good. I could taste hints of very light honey which was very pleasant. The draw was still excellent, and the burn was even.
    Final Thoughts:
This Drew Estate Liga Undercrown Shade Gran Toro was a great cigar. The construction was fantastic. The draw was amazing. And I really enjoyed the medium/bold flavors that reminded me of Grape Nuts cereal and sometimes even Cheerios. There was also the occasional hint of sweetness.
I would definitely smoke the Liga Undercrown Shade again, and this cigar earns a CigarScore 5.

UGLY But Smokable? The Punch CHOP SUEY - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

UGLY But Smokable? The Punch CHOP SUEY - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

The Punch Chop Suey is kind of an ugly cigar. Not much attention was paid to making this lancero look perfect, but hopefully, what the Chop Suey lacks in appearance (due to the inch and a half long shaggy foot), the cigar can make up for in flavor!
After using the v-cut (a.k.a "notch cut") to open up the cigar, the draw was a smidge tight. On the cold draw, I could taste tobacco that seemed a little green and under-aged.
However, after torching the end, I could taste leather and cedar. During the first few minutes, the flavors were mellow with just hints of spice.

Through the first half of the Punch Chop Suey, I enjoyed it. The flavors were semi-complex, and with a little sweetness. The draw was just a little tight, but not bad. The burn could have been better, but I didn't have to relight the cigar.
    Final Thoughts:
While this cigar has a funny name and questionable construction quality, at the end of the day, the Punch Chop Suey is just an "okay" cigar. For the entire smoke, the draw was annoyingly tight, and, toward the end, the flavors toward became a little harsh. But, the stick I smoked had a decent burn.
Although the Chop Suey isn't a bad cigar, it's not a great cigar either. Had I enjoyed the second half as much as the first, perhaps things (and the CigarScore) would be different. But, for today, the Punch Chop Suey earns a CigarScore 2.

A Cheap CHAMPAGNE? PERDOMO Lot 23 CONNECTICUT Robusto - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

A Cheap CHAMPAGNE? PERDOMO Lot 23 CONNECTICUT Robusto - CIGAR REVIEWS by CigarScore

The Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro is a cigar that made it onto the CigarScore Top 10 Cigars Under $10 list, so when I had a chance to review the Connecticut of the same line, I took it.
    Cigar Taxes by State: https://www.cigarscore.com/states-with-the-highest-tobacco-taxes/
    Top 10 Breakfast Cigars: https://www.cigarscore.com/top-10-breakfast-cigars-to-pair-with-coffee/
Perdomo cigars, a.k.a. Tabacalera Perdomo is known for two things, making great cigars and being budget-friendly. Also, if you're looking for cigars aged in bourbon barrels, Perdomo has been doing that for years. It's the #PerdomoWay.
NOTE: According to the Perdomo website, "Perdomo Cigars is the only cigar manufacturer to completely absorb the punitive SCHIP federal excise tax on all of its brands, and we will continue to do so. As a family business, we have held our prices and in many cases reduced them in order to be extremely competitive. "
The Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto is a budget-friendly cigar that I plan on comparing to the Perdomo Champagne, after all, they've got similar tobaccos inside. After punching the end, the draw of the Lot 23 was loose, and the flavors I could taste before lighting the cigar were of dried grass.

Through the middle third of the cigar, the draw of the Lot 23 was perfect. The flavors, however, were fairly basic, reminiscent of licking construction paper, but there is some spice on the retrohale. While Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto is a decent cigar in its own right, a budget Champagne it is not.
    Final Thoughts:
Overall, the construction and build quality of the Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto was fantastic. While the flavors were fairly mild and mellow, they were pretty good also, and there was no harshness until the final third. No bitter flavors presented themselves.
The Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto is a budget-friendly cigar that delivers a solid performance. Although it might not have the richness and complexity a seasoned smoker might look for, it's still a cigar anyone would be happy to have in their humidor. For these reasons, the Perdomo Lot 23 Connecticut Robusto earns a CigarScore 3.
