A gem of an episode with John Cleese

I’ve always suspected that the most successful comedians are serious intellectuals, and this episode is proof. John and Bill are delightful in their wide-ranging discourse, demonstrating genuine curiosity about the world. And as an alumnus of Cornell University I was taken back to my freshman year at the cold, dreary (but ultimately wonderful) university on the hill. Bill, I too, contemplated leaving after my first year, completely convinced I had no business being there (the school of architecture was particularly rough)!

Sage Steele

Bill and the pod are great, but the continued efforts to force feed Sage Steele’s podcast are beyond annoying. She is a whiny professional victim. She is literally everything Bill purports to dislike about today’s society, but he keeps putting her vapid show in his feed. JUST STOP!

This show is a mess

I've long enjoyed Real Time as one of the few media venues where people who disagree engage in something approximating open and honest discussion, seasoned with some pretty shrewd (and funny) political commentary from Maher.

This is not that. Rather, this seems to be an expression of Maher's apparent obsession with celebrity. The guests are frequently vapid and uninteresting, leading me to skip the majority of episodes. But even when the guests are worth listening to, Maher often gets so high and tipsy that he literally can't track the conversation. He'll make a point or a joke, the guest will respond to it, and Maher reacts like he has no idea what they are talking about or how they even got on the subject. It's frankly a bit embarrassing--and more than a little frustrating--as a listener, made worse still by the cloying neediness of the man as he sweats all over his famous guests, grasping for a word of approval.

Maher's habit of mistaking his own level of conviction over a position as an objective gauge of its accuracy is also on full display here. That seems to get tamped down a bit on Real Time, but here you get to seem him have a sort of a reactionary fit any time his various anti-science views come up.
