STORY 1: Police: Woman on Cocaine and Fentanyl Caused Fatal Crash in Smyrna

Sandrika Brock, a Marietta woman, faces charges including vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, and DUI after a fatal crash in Smyrna on Oct. 20. Allegedly under the influence of cocaine, marijuana, and fentanyl, Brock reportedly caused the collision while driving westbound in the eastbound lane, crashing into Jose Cuellar's Kia Sportage. Leonard Johnson was killed, and Cuellar and Maria Cuellar were seriously injured. Brock's boyfriend, Aaron Thedford, was also injured. Police refute Brock's claim that Thedford grabbed the wheel, stating evidence suggests Brock accelerated toward oncoming traffic. Brock, found driving without insurance or a seatbelt, is held without bond at Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

STORY 2: Teenager Accused of Having Gun at Sprayberry High School

Cameron Mekhi Hester, 17, is accused of possessing a .177 caliber Daisy pistol in his bookbag following a physical altercation at Sprayberry High School on March 14. Assistant Principal Richmond Parker discovered the gun during an administrative search. Hester faces a charge of carrying weapons within a school safety zone. He was arrested on March 22 and booked into Cobb County Adult Detention Center, later released on a $3,500 bond.

STORY 3: Cobb County Stormwater Fee Vote Delayed Amid Deluge of Opposition

The Cobb Board of Commissioners, considering a stormwater fee, faced significant opposition during a meeting packed with residents. Commissioner Jerica Richardson expressed hesitancy after public comment, requesting more education for residents and stakeholder meetings. The proposed fee would fund stormwater infrastructure improvements, but many residents opposed it, calling it a tax burden. Richardson's motion to delay the vote was supported, aiming to refine the proposal and engage the community further. The board agreed to postpone the decision to August, seeking to address concerns and enhance understanding before proceeding.

STORY 4: Cobb Commission Makes Changes to Public Comment Rules

The Cobb Board of Commissioners made several revisions to its rules on public comment during a marathon meeting. Changes included increasing the number of speakers allowed from 12 to 20 but reducing their speaking time from five to three minutes each. Speakers are now restricted to one slot per meeting, and commissioners' remarks after public comment periods were shortened to three minutes. Discussion also arose about prohibiting audiovisual presentations during public comment due to cybersecurity concerns, with Chairwoman Lisa Cupid suggesting addressing concerns separately. Despite opposition, most changes were approved, including limits on commissioners' presentations and prohibitions on campaigning during public comments.

Cobb Commission Makes Changes to Public Comment Rules

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, March 27th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cobb Commission Makes Changes to Public Comment Rules

The Cobb Board of Commissioners has recently implemented amendments to the guidelines governing public commentary during its meetings. The alterations include an expansion of available public comment slots from 12 to 20, accompanied by a reduction in speaking time from five minutes to three minutes per individual. Furthermore, participants are now limited to a single speaking slot per session. The board has also condensed the period allocated for commissioners' responses following the public commentary segment. While there was preliminary consideration for the inclusion of audiovisual presentations during these sessions, the decision has been deferred for future deliberation. Additional modifications include a restriction on commissioners to one presentation each meeting, the introduction of regulations against campaign activities, and adjustments to the criteria for permissible comments. These revisions were enacted despite reservations expressed by Commissioner Birrell.

STORY 1: Man Indicted in Death of Disabled Elderly Woman

Gary Allen Williams, a 66-year-old east Cobb man, was indicted by a Cobb grand jury for murder and neglect following the death of Addreinne Gordon, a disabled elderly woman in his care, who died from sepsis in November 2021. Williams is accused of neglecting Gordon, who was bedridden and paralyzed on her left side, resulting in severe injuries including bed sores, matted hair, untrimmed nails, and feces accumulation. Despite being her sole caretaker, Williams denied seeing her injuries. Gordon died the next day after being admitted to the hospital. Williams is currently detained at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on $110,220 bond for murder and $16,720 bond for neglecting a disabled adult.

STORY 2: Two Indicted for Murder After Child Dies With Fentanyl in System

A grand jury has indicted Jocelyn Romero and Pablo Calihua-Garcia on charges of murder and drug trafficking, including substances such as fentanyl and methamphetamine. This follows the tragic death of a child, discovered with fentanyl in his system, in an apartment complex on Cobb Parkway during the period between October and November 2023.

Romero faces separate murder charges after the child's demise in the same apartment, underscored by a toxicology report confirming fentanyl exposure. The discovery of fentanyl within the premises has led to additional scrutiny of the accused’s activities.

Both Romero and Calihua-Garcia are charged with felony murder and drug trafficking charges, highlighting the endangerment of a toddler through their alleged fentanyl trafficking operations. They are currently detained without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, awaiting trial as co-defendants.

STORY 3: Historic Barn Destroyed by Fire

A historic barn on the property of the McAfee House caught fire over the weekend. Cobb County Fire crews swiftly responded to the blaze, which was extinguished within an hour. While the house itself, built in the 1840s and serving as a Civil War headquarters, was spared, the barn suffered significant damage and is considered a total loss. The property, owned by a family that hasn't occupied it for over a decade, is up for sale as a commercial development site. Cobb Landmarks hopes to relocate the house and remaining barn to preserve its historical significance amid surrounding developments, though legal protections for its heritage are lacking.

STORY 4: Fired Cobb Teacher Appeals in Cobb Superior Court

A Cobb County fifth-grade teacher fired for reading a book about gender identity to students has appealed her termination to Cobb Superior Court after the Georgia Board of Education upheld her firing. The appeal contends the Cobb school board's decision was arbitrary and lacking evidence. Rinderle was dismissed for reading "My Shadow is Purple," which features a nonbinary character, despite a tribunal recommending against termination. Disqualified Commission Candidate Appeals to Superior Court

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Monday, March 25th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Disqualified Commission Candidate Appeals to Superior Court

Alicia Adams the former Republican candidate for Cobb Board of Commissioners District 2 has taken legal action to contest her disqualification from the upcoming May 21 primary election. Adams' petition to the Cobb Superior Court seeks to overturn her candidacy disqualification and requests the postponement of the primary election, centering on a contentious debate over the district map used for candidate qualification.

The core of the dispute lies in the Cobb Board of Elections’ decision to use a "home rule" map adopted by the commission's Democratic majority rather than the map approved by the Georgia General Assembly. This controversy was further ignited when a lawsuit challenged Adams' candidacy based on residency criteria under the "home rule" map, leading to her disqualification.

Cobb Superior Court previously ruled the Democrats' home rule resolution unconstitutional, with an appeal pending before the Supreme Court of Georgia. In response to the lawsuit, the Cobb Board of Elections' attorney has withheld comments, pending a court hearing.

Adams and her legal team are advocating for an expedited review and hearing, aiming to resolve the dispute over which map should govern candidate qualifications and potentially affect the scheduling of the May 21 primary.

    17-Year-Old Charged in Sprayberry Stabbing

A critical stabbing incident at Sprayberry High School in Cobb County led to a Code Red lockdown just before noon on Wednesday. The victim, an 18-year-old student, is in critical condition. The 17-year-old suspect, Aedan Smith, faces charges of aggravated assault and carrying a weapon within a school safety zone.

The altercation reportedly occurred during a fight in a bathroom, according to a senior student witness. Following the incident, the suspect fled but was later taken into custody by police, allowing classes to resume with increased police presence.

STORY 1: Cobb School Board Member Criticizes Agenda of Upcoming Meeting as 'Premature'

The Cobb County Board of Education is poised to deliberate on the appointment of a construction manager for the proposed $50 million event center and examine policy amendments during its Thursday meeting. However, specifics regarding the construction manager selection and associated costs have not been made public, prompting critiques over the absence of transparency.

Board member Becky Sayler has voiced objections to the perceived opaqueness surrounding the event center project and the suggested policy modifications. These include the proposed deletion of the term "equitable" from the district's resource distribution policy and an increase in the superintendent’s authority concerning budget transfers.

Sayler's concerns, shared via social media, elicited a rebuttal from board chairman Randy Scamihorn, who labeled the critique as premature. Additionally, there is ongoing debate among stakeholders about the revised policies' definition of "stakeholders" and worries over the proposed changes to budget oversight. The board's discussion is anticipated this Thursday.

STORY 2: Former GA Attorney General Sam Olens Honors Legacy of Cobb County Leaders

During a speech to the Kiwanis Club of Marietta, former Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens commemorated the impactful contributions of Cobb County leaders David Hankerson, Van Pearlberg, and Earl Smith.

Olens detailed Hankerson's commitment to service and principled leadership, Pearlberg's achievements within the Medicaid Fraud Division coupled with his empathetic demeanor, and Smith's dedication to enhancing public transit and preserving culture.

His speech also acknowledged the significant influence and partnership of the leaders' spouses in their endeavors.

STORY 3: Mableton Council Meets for 3-Day Conference Friday

The Mableton City Council is set to conduct a three-day strategic conference in Cumberland, beginning this Friday, with the aim of outlining the city's plans for the upcoming year. The agenda includes a team-building event at Punch Bowl Social at the Battery on Friday, followed by planning sessions at the Doubletree Suites over the weekend.

Discussions will center on transitioning certain services from Cobb County to the city, aligning with city charter requirements, and will cover key areas such as planning and zoning, code enforcement, solid waste management, and recreational facilities development on Saturday.

Sunday's meetings will focus on financial controls, a budget calendar overview, and a comprehensive operational plan. Mayor Michael Owens highlighted the choice of Cumberland for the conference as a strategic move to enhance focus and productivity by minimizing routine distractions. The conference will be open to public attendance.
