STORY 1: Former Police Officer Indicted in Fatal Shooting of Marietta Man

Former Woodstock police officer Grant Matthew Shaw has been indicted by a Cobb County grand jury for involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Emmanuel Malik Millard during a police chase late last year. Shaw, 23, is accused of causing Millard's death "without any intention to do so." While the grand jury declined to indict Shaw for felony murder and aggravated assault, Shaw was taken into custody and is held without bond. The shooting occurred after a police chase led by Millard from Woodstock into Cobb County. Shaw, who resigned from the Woodstock Police Department in October, was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation's results.

STORY 2: Cobb Chairwoman Calls Out Republican Resistance to Ramadan Resolution

Chairwoman Lisa Cupid criticized Commissioners Keli Gambrill and JoAnn Birrell for their opposition to a Ramadan proclamation while supporting an antisemitism resolution. Cupid highlighted this as a double standard, advocating for equal recognition and fairness across communities. Despite the controversy, she affirmed her support for the "End Jewish Hate Day" but called for consistent and fair acknowledgment of all religious and cultural celebrations.

STORY 3: Palmer Middle School Continues Earning Recognitions for Helping Students Succeed

Palmer Middle School has gained recognition for its exceptional achievements, being named a National AVID Demonstration School and attracting attention from educational organizations like Learn4Life and the Georgia Education Policy Fellowship Program. Learn4Life representatives visited Palmer to understand its successful strategies, particularly in supporting Black and Hispanic students who outperform regional peers. The Georgia Education Policy Fellowship Program also visited to learn about the school's culture and academic success. Palmer's strategies include Schoolwide AVID Strategies, PBIS, counseling programs, and intervention strategies. The school emphasizes inclusivity, celebrates student and staff accomplishments, and fosters a supportive environment. Additionally, Palmer has been recognized for its health initiatives and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program. The dedication of Palmer's educators, including Cobb County Social Worker of the Year Ginnie Barnes and Georgia Middle School Art Teacher of the Year Nicole Gaut, contributes to its success.

Cobb to Rename Headquarters for Late County Manager Hankerson

Cobb County has announced plans to honor the legacy of its first Black county manager, David Hankerson, by renaming its headquarters after him. The Cobb County Building located at 100 Cherokee Street in downtown Marietta will be renamed the David Hankerson Building. Hankerson, who passed away on January 25 at the age of 77, served as county manager for 24 years, making him one of the longest-serving county managers in Georgia. His significant contributions include the creation of the Cobb Safety Village. The Cobb Board of Commissioners is set to officially rename the building and present a proclamation to Hankerson's family during a ceremony at their meeting on Tuesday.

Cobb Schools Removes Four More Books From Libraries

Cobb Schools Removes Four More Books From Libraries

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, April 19th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cobb Schools Removes Four More Books From Libraries

The Cobb County School District, under Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, has removed four more books from its libraries, citing them as "age-inappropriate." The titles include ‘It Ends with Us,’ ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower,’ ‘Lucky,’ and ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’. This follows the removal of two other books in August 2023. Ragsdale emphasized the action as protecting children from explicit content, framing it as a moral issue. Here is Ragsdale on the additional book bans:

However, some parents, like Sharon Hudson, criticized the move, defending media specialists' expertise and accusing the board of overstepping. Here is Hudson on the additional book bans:

Ragsdale countered criticism by denying that the district is banning books, likening the removals to restricting access to movies not suitable for children, and stated the process aims to ensure no inappropriate materials are in school libraries.

STORY 1: Man Arrested After Bringing Gun to Kennesaw Mountain High School

An 18-year-old Kennesaw man, Theodore Davidson, was arrested at Kennesaw Mountain High School for bringing a loaded, sawed-off rifle to an event hosted there. He was apprehended on school grounds during the event, Kennesaw Mountainfest. Davidson claimed the rifle belonged to his father, who instructed him to take possession of it. Cobb Board of Education Chairman Randy Scamihorn stated Davidson was not a district-enrolled student and suggested Davidson may have had an altercation with his girlfriend. The event was not officially sanctioned by the school or district, but Scamihorn emphasized the paramount importance of safety on school campuses. Davidson faces charges including possessing a weapon on school property and is held in Cobb jail without bond.

STORY 2: Cobb DA: Man Wanted for Selling Heroin That Killed 17-Year-Old

The Cobb District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Austin Joseph Love, accusing him of selling heroin to a 17-year-old who fatally overdosed on the drug. The incident occurred at a Waffle House on Sept. 30, 2023. Surveillance footage, Love’s provided phone number, and car registration led to his identification as the suspect. The GBI confirmed the substance as heroin and Love has not been arrested. The DA's Opioid Fatality Project aims to combat the opioid epidemic. Challenges include investigating overdose cases and law enforcement unfamiliarity. Love faces a felony charge of selling heroin.

STORY 3: Georgia Justices Grill Lawyers in Cobb Map Case

The Supreme Court of Georgia held a hearing on the legal battle over Cobb Board of Commissioners’ electoral maps. Justices questioned both sides but didn't reveal their stance. The dispute arose when the county replaced state-drawn maps, affecting Commissioner Jerica Richardson's district. The challenge focused on the plaintiffs' standing to sue. The Attorney General's Office argued against the county's invocation of home rule powers. The court's decision is expected before mid-November, but it's unclear if it'll impact the upcoming primary election. The hearing highlighted uncertainty over standing and the separation of powers between county and state.

Marietta Schools Superintendent Grant Rivera presented the proposed 2025 budget, featuring a 5.3% average salary increase for teachers without raising the millage rate. The state's approved $2,500 raises for teaching staff contribute to this salary boost. The proposed budget, outlined by CFO Erin Franklin, entails an $11 million increase, largely attributed to rising employee benefits. Board member Angela Orange expressed satisfaction with the budget, emphasizing the importance of keeping up with the cost of living. University System of Georgia raising tuition by 2.5%

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, April 17th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

University System of Georgia raising tuition by 2.5%

In a recent decision by the University System of Georgia, in-state undergraduates will face a 2.5% tuition increase for the upcoming school year, marking a shift after six years of stable tuition rates across most of its 26 institutions. The Board of Trustees has also approved a 5% increase for out-of-state students, with a new tier set at 2% above this rate for international students. System Chancellor Sonny Perdue said the adjustment is attributed to inflation and aims to maintain the quality and competitiveness of Georgia's public colleges and universities. The increase translates to a $69 rise per semester for in-state students at Kennesaw State University, reaching $2,850, while out-of-state students will experience a $490 hike, totaling $10,305 per semester. The decision has elicited concern among students, particularly those without financial aid. Despite these changes, Georgia remains among the states with the lowest average tuition in the Southern Regional Education Board. Additionally, the board has revised mandatory fees for online learners and extended a waiver on test score admissions requirements for most institutions for the 2025-26 academic year, excluding the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Georgia College & State University.

STORY 1: Kemp Touts Tax Cuts and Economic Growth at Cobb Chamber

Governor Brian Kemp celebrated legislative victories and economic achievements in a speech to the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, highlighting income tax cuts, upcoming sports events, and economic development projects. He praised Georgia's role as a global hub for sports and outlined investments in infrastructure, education, and public safety. However, some critics, like State Rep. Teri Anulewicz, raised concerns about gun safety and Medicaid expansion. Anulewicz also noted the absence of discussions on sports betting, which she believes could generate revenue for need-based HOPE scholarships. Despite criticisms, Cobb Chamber Chairman Mike Plant commended Kemp's leadership, while Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid emphasized Cobb's interconnectedness with Georgia's success and anticipated continued growth.

STORY 2: Lake Acworth Declared Safe After Sewage Spill

Lake Acworth has resumed recreational activities following a sewage spill caused by a fallen tree damaging an above-ground sewage line on U.S. Army Corp of Engineers property. The spill, totaling under 10,000 gallons, didn't meet the criteria for a "major spill" as per Georgia Environmental Protection Division guidelines. Although some reported seeing a sheen on the water, survey crews determined it was caused by pollen and airborne particulates accumulating on the lake's surface.

STORY 3: Gas Prices Continue to Rise in Georgia

Gas prices in Georgia have surged, with residents now paying 10 cents more per gallon compared to last week and 17 cents more than last month, according to AAA. In Cobb, the average price per gallon stands at $3.47, slightly higher than the state average. Drivers across Georgia are facing a 60-cent increase compared to a year ago. This rise is attributed to factors including crude oil prices around $85 per barrel, high demand, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Despite the increase, Georgians are still paying about 20 cents less per gallon than the national average. AAA suggests several tips for drivers to save money at the pump, including shopping around for gas prices, enrolling in fuel savings programs, and maintaining their vehicles for better fuel economy.
