Ep. 100. All Brains Belong Part 2. What you need to know about Neurodivergent minds and fibromyalgia type illnesses. Profound impacts beyond the pain.

We continue to gain insights into the surprising and profound connections between autism, neurodivergent minds, and fibromyalgia-related struggles.
    Dr. Hauser shares:
"I can't tell you how often someone comes in with 40 diagnoses and they feel so broken because clearly I must be broken if there are 40 things wrong with me and I say, oh no, you don't have 40 things wrong with you.
You have one thing. It's called All the Things. Oh, and by the way, let's talk about your brain. That's how those conversations tend to go.
But what gave me a sense of urgency is that shortly after I got my autism diagnosis, I learned a statistic that the average life expectancy for an autistic person is 36 to 54 years of age.
I was 37, not dying from autism, dying from premature cardiovascular disease, and suicide. Wow. To me, that's so messed up. That's so messed up that, like, the healthcare system doesn't even, I don't think people even know that even doctors who care for autistic people don't know that."

Dr. Lenz is an internist, pediatrician, lifestyle medicine physician, and clinical lipidologist interested in helping those with fibromyalgia and related problems go beyond just learning to live with it and even reverse fibromyalgia. He is also the author of the book "Conquering Your Fibromyalgia: Real Answers and Real Solutions for Real Pain. " It is also available on audiobook with Dr. Lenz as the narrator.

All Brains Belong Part 1. Neurodivergent brains, Autism and the connection to Fibromyalgia. Interview with Dr. Mel Hauser.

This is the first part of a 4 part conversation with Dr. Mel Hauser, a family practice doctor who has dedicated her career to helping those with neurodivergent minds. Surprisingly there is a connection between autism and fibromyalgia and related problems which Dr. Hauser and her staff call "all the things." This conversation may be the most impactful and eye-opening interview I have done.  It was an opportunity to zoom out, allowing me and likely you to gain a different perspective of fibromyalgia. For many listening, it will, at a minimum, be validation. Still, for others, it may be the first time you have ever considered much of what is going to be discussed that, at a minimum, will lead to thoughtful contemplation, whether you are living with, loving, or providing care for someone with fibromyalgia and related problems.

"Having fibromyalgia is like living between two bookends on a narrow shelf" Lynn's story.

"Having fibromyalgia is like living between two bookends on a narrow shelf" Lynn's story.

This is the last of 3 interviews from listeners of the podcast. Lynn from Minnesota shares her journey. Here is some of what she had to share.
"It's that whole moderation aspect or the balance aspect. I used to joke that having fibromyalgia was like living between two bookends on a narrow shelf.  It sounds limiting, and I don't mean to make it sound that way, but I have found that I must be so intentional.   I pay attention to everything.
Fortunately, I have a disciplined personality, which works for me.
You also commented about the brains of fibro people sometimes coming alive at nine o'clock or at the end of the night. And I went, yes. I was yelling out while listening to that. So again, that was just another example of something new that I had learned. When I heard your podcast, it was more like, Wow.
Here's a doctor that pays attention, that cares. And here are the stories of these other people. I'm truly not alone. And then hearing what other people have done for success.  So often mimicking what I've already learned, but it was confirmation that I had approached things in a good way, and I knew that."
But just to hear and have that, I guess connection with other people is something that is lacking when you are just living in an environment where all your peers or family members are totally healthy.  It's that sense of hope."

This is a special fibromyalgia awareness month, and we are sharing the stories of listeners like yourself. Amy emailed me with a question about diagnosing fibromyalgia which I discussed on an earlier podcast. On today's episode, we get to hear her story of fibromyalgia. It has not been easy, but she has enjoyed the podcast and wishes she had discovered it earlier on the podcast. Ep. 95. The Invisible deadly illness lurking in many with fibromyalgia and what you can do about it.

This week discusses heart disease, the number one killer of men and women. In addition to having a strong interest in fibromyalgia and related problems, he also has a strong interest in preventing and treating this serious condition. In this week's episode, you hear about his journey. Nearly all heart disease, the accumulation of plaque in the heart's arteries, is preventable. Still, most, including those with fibromyalgia, are unaware of this silent, lurking disease.  Last week we heard Martin Keogh, author of Naked Realities, share his journey into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which started with a heart attack. A large study showed a 65% greater risk of heart disease in those with fibromyalgia.
Early identification and treatment with appropriate medications and lifestyle have proven to reverse heart disease. You will learn more about advanced lipid testing and others that can identify if you are at risk.
Dr. Lenz also discusses a study about the concern many with fibromyalgia have about using statins and the worsening of their fibromyalgia symptoms.

In-depth into the “unknown”

I have been struggling to find what was wrong with me then to accept it and now to understand it. I found this podcast and started listening to it from the beginning. I’m so glad I did! It gives you finally a perspective that you are not alone and meds are not the only solution. I thank Dr. Lenz because I emailed him with a question and within hours he called me back! You don’t get that service and interest from someone that is not even your doctor. Thank you for caring!

Life Changing Information for our Son - from a Fellow Health Profesional

Dr. Michael Lenz has changed the lives of our family. My 17 year old son has been suffering from Fibromyalgia for over 3 years. However, we didn’t know it was fibromyalgia until about 1 year ago. And to add to that, I’m a pharmacist, who initially even after he was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia was in denial. My Pharmacist training, and just being a father, was set on finding an exact cause of what was going on with my son and fixing it. My son was very active in sports and outdoor activities much of his life. However, after a football injury to his lower leg when he was in 8th grade our journey began. He was complaining of general pain not just in his leg but throughout his whole body. He was having trouble with focusing at school. He was becoming depressed and frustrated that he was not feeling any better. To summarize our experiences I will just list the type of doctors, specialists, and procedures we tried: 1) MRI on injured knee 2) Trip to a Children’s hospital to have a bone biopsy done to rule out cancer 3) Lyme disease test 4) visit to pediactric Rheumatology 5) diagnosis of Hemochromatosis 6) visit to childrens genetic doctor (who made the diagnosis of fibromyalgia) 7) visit to pediatric cardiology 8) visits to chiropractor 9) visits with pediatric phychologist 10) mental health therapy for depression, etc. Overall, almost every test and lab came back normal. There was no explanation for why he was feeling the way he felt. Buying Dr. Lenz’s book ‘Conquering Your Fibromyalgia,’ was life changing as it was like it was telling our story exactly. As a result my son was diagnosed with ADHD, which I was also in denial of as a pharmacist because my son up until recently has always performed well in school and didn’t have symptoms of hyperactivity, etc. However, starting treatment for this has drastically improved his overall general health. Not only can he focus better, but his pain levels have greatly improved, he is getting much more restful sleep, his mood has improved, and most importantly he is feeling normal. I waited a couple of months to post this review because I wanted to give some time to see if this therapy continued to work. I’m happy to say that we are optimistic that our son will continue to improve as it has been almost 3 months with no need to adjust doses, etc. I can’t thank Dr. Lenz enough for doing so much research on this severely under recognized condition. His Podcasts, as well as his book, are full of useful information to help all patients who are suffering from this complicated and frustrating condition. As a fellow healthcare professional, this experience, has greatly impacted my views and treatment options for this condition. Thank you Dr. Lenz for your dedication and expertise in helping to share your important and evolving information to all patients.
