Bipolar Is Who I Am: Chris LaFreniere On Mental Illness, Addiction, & Faith

Send us Fan Mail In this episode, I sit down with Chris LaFreniere, author of Bipolar Is Who I Am: A Journey of Transformation, Redemption, and Managing the Chaos Within, to discuss one of the most misunderstood mental illnesses in the world. Mr. LaFreniere shares his deeply personal story of living with Bipolar I Disorder, including psychosis, paranoia, repeated psychiatric hospitalizations, addiction, and the long road toward stability. Rather than offering easy answers, he provides an honest look at what recovery actually requires and why hope is still possible even in life's darkest moments. Mr. LaFreniere walks us through his first manic episode, the terrifying delusions that led to his diagnosis, and the difficult years that followed as he repeatedly cycled through treatment before finally accepting the importance of medication, healthy routines, sobriety, and accountability. We also discuss how his Christian faith became an essential part of his recovery, the role of prayer and church community, overcoming alcohol and substance abuse, and why recovery from bipolar disorder is about lifelong management rather than pretending the illness simply disappears. Throughout our conversation, I explore the growing misconceptions surrounding mental illness in today's culture and why authentic conversations like this matter. We discuss the importance of removing stigma, encouraging people to seek professional help, balancing faith with medical treatment, and remembering that mental illness does not define a person's value or future. https://www.bipolariswhoiam.com/ Website: https://coupleonukes.com Exodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/ Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Healing The Wounded Inner Child: Addiction, Trauma, And Codependency Recovery

Send us Fan Mail In my first international in-person podcast interview, I sit down with author and professional drummer David Deane Haskell in Japan for an honest conversation about childhood trauma, addiction recovery, codependency, identity, and inner-child healing. Mr. Haskell is the author of five science-fiction books and Wounded Angels, a deeply personal account of connecting with the wounded versions of himself that remained frozen within traumatic experiences. Mr. Haskell shares how losing his mother to suicide at four years old—and learning the details of her death at nine—created wounds involving abandonment, shame, dissociation, bullying, and difficulty forming relationships. We explore his experiences growing up with an alcoholic father, being treated as the family scapegoat, searching for safety through television and idealized families, and eventually turning toward drugs and alcohol. His journey later included a suicide attempt, professional drumming at Tokyo Disneyland, years of isolation, damaged family relationships, and finally beginning his sobriety journey in 2018. We examine the central message of Wounded Angels: our destructive behaviors may originate as attempts to protect wounded parts of ourselves. Mr. Haskell explains why inner-child work is not necessarily about confronting or correcting those younger versions of ourselves, but listening to them, understanding what they were trying to protect, and determining whether those survival strategies are still serving us. We also discuss codependency, compulsive rescuing, emotional numbing, unhealthy relationships, body-based warning signals, twelve-step recovery, therapy, boundaries, and the complicated process of repairing relationships after addiction. Throughout the conversation, I connect Mr. Haskell’s experiences with my own upbringing around addiction, bullying, family abuse, religious weaponization, and my continuing relationship with an addicted parent. We discuss forgiveness with boundaries, suicide prevention, the hidden pain behind apparently successful people, generational trauma, parenting after addiction, and why healing requires both accountability and compassion. Ultimately, this episode reminds us that while hurt people can hurt people, healed people can also help heal people—and we each have a choice in what we build from what we survived. https://daviddeanehaskell.com/ Website: https://coupleonukes.com Exodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/ Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? The Extraordinary Men’s Network: Sobriety, Accountability, Understanding, & Mental Health

Send us Fan Mail In this episode, I reconnect with Andrew Michael Houghton, founder of the Extraordinary Men’s Network, nearly two years after his first appearance on the show. Mr. Houghton joins me from Korea while I’m in Japan, and we catch up on sobriety, fatherhood, marriage, men’s mental health, accountability, and the work of building healthier communities for men. Mr. Houghton shares how the past two years have been both difficult and deeply meaningful, including some of the hardest periods of his life alongside some of the most blessed. We talk about how sobriety changed his life, why community was essential to staying sober, and how his own recovery journey helped inspire the Extraordinary Men’s Network. Mr. Houghton explains that men need spaces where they can share honestly without judgment, receive accountability, and realize they are not alone. We also discuss addiction, rationalization, relapse, and the dangerous belief that recovery has a final finish line. Mr. Houghton shares how alcohol became tied to confidence, escape, insecurity, and emotional regulation before eventually becoming destructive. I also reflect on how many people treat sobriety, marriage, self-improvement, or emotional discipline like a destination instead of a lifelong practice, and why lowering your guard can allow old patterns to return. Later, we get into coaching, fatherhood, marriage, comparison, and the hidden stories men carry inside. Mr. Houghton explains how he became a coach after realizing that many men need more than information; they need support, honest reflection, accountability, and someone willing to challenge them without becoming a yes-man. We also talk about how men often compare themselves not only to social media and celebrity culture, but to internal stories inherited from parents, teachers, childhood, and society. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/14p75CDqy2C/ Website: https://coupleonukes.com Exodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/ Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? The "5th Beast" In Daniel Everyone Overlooks & Why It Matters

Send us Fan Mail In this Radiating Faith sermon, I examine what I call “the beast outside the vision”—a startling connection between Daniel’s vision of four beasts and what happened to King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4. Although Scripture identifies only four beasts within Daniel’s vision, Nebuchadnezzar later experienced a real transformation that made him live and behave like an animal. His hair grew like eagle feathers, his nails resembled a bird’s claws, and his human reason was taken from him until he acknowledged the sovereignty of God.  I compare Daniel 4 and Daniel 7 to explore why prideful rulers and violent kingdoms are represented as beasts. Humanity was created in the image of God, but oppression, greed, arrogance, and rebellion lead us away from the qualities we were created to reflect. Nebuchadnezzar possessed enormous power, prosperity, and influence, yet his pride caused him to take credit for what God had permitted him to build. The powerful king was consequently humbled until he understood who truly rules over the kingdoms of the earth.  This message is not only a warning but it is also a story of mercy and restoration. God ordered the great tree representing Nebuchadnezzar to be cut down, but He preserved its stump and roots. Once Nebuchadnezzar looked toward heaven, acknowledged God’s authority, and regained his sanity, his kingdom was restored. The same God who humbles prideful people also offers restoration to those who repent and return to Him.  I also consider what these passages mean for our personal conduct and modern governments. Are our decisions reflecting the image of God, or are pride, selfishness, power, and sin transforming us into something spiritually beastlike? This sermon challenges us to examine our lives, pray for our leaders, recognize the spiritual warfare surrounding earthly authority, and pursue the heart, mind, and character of Jesus Christ.  Website: https://coupleonukes.com Exodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/ Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? The Queen Of Empathy On Emotional Intelligence, Connection, And The Hero Within

Send us Fan Mail In this episode, I reconnect with Karen Hall, known as the Queen of Empathy, nearly three years after we first met at Podcast Movement Evolutions in Los Angeles. Ms. Hall is an emotional intelligence leadership coach, podcaster, speaker, author, editor, publicist, event producer, and advocate for helping people recognize the hero within themselves. We discuss empathy, connection, courage, leadership, faith, parenting, public speaking, emotional awareness, and the quiet ways ordinary people become heroes. Ms. Hall shares how her podcast, The Hero Within, grew out of her desire to help people feel less alone. After experiencing rejection, loneliness, misunderstanding, and family estrangement, she realized that people do not need identical experiences in order to relate emotionally. We explore the difference between labels and feelings, why empathy does not require shared circumstances, and how people sometimes use “I can’t relate” as an excuse to avoid discomfort or responsibility. We also discuss Ms. Hall’s personal story, including being born two and a half months premature, surviving despite severe medical concerns, growing up with anxiety, overcoming a fear of public speaking, and learning to turn sensitivity into strength. She explains how being a highly sensitive person and an empath shaped her parenting, coaching, leadership, and spiritual life. I also share my thoughts on helping children identify emotions, asking why before punishing, and creating an environment where people feel safe enough to communicate honestly. Later, we explore emotional intelligence in leadership and why psychological safety, trust, and empathy directly affect engagement, creativity, productivity, loyalty, and profitability. Ms. Hall explains that leadership is not merely about authority or title; it is about whether people feel safe, heard, and valued. We also discuss her work with the Los Angeles Tribune, the Global Women’s Journal, international events, Latina women, authors, speakers, and leaders who want to use their stories to serve others. https://karenhallcoaching.com/ Website: https://coupleonukes.com Exodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/ Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Before Godzilla, There Was Leviathan: Why The Bible's Sea Monster Still Matters

Send us Fan Mail In this Solo Scripture Samurai Arc sermon, I reflect on my journey to Awaji Island, Japan, where I experienced the Godzilla Interception Operation during a typhoon. Standing beneath the towering figure of Shin Godzilla made me think about humanity’s fascination with kaiju, sea monsters, and seemingly unstoppable forces—and ultimately led me back to the biblical account of Leviathan.  I explore what Scripture says about Leviathan through Genesis, Job, Psalms, Isaiah, and Jeremiah. Rather than claiming that Godzilla is Leviathan or settling every debate about whether Leviathan was literal, symbolic, or something else, I focus on the central message of these passages: a creature no human being could hope to control still belongs completely to God. The One who formed the seas, established their boundaries, and created Leviathan, which possesses power beyond anything humanity can manufacture or imagine.  Leviathan also gives us a powerful way to understand the overwhelming problems we face. Financial hardship, damaged relationships, mental-health struggles, uncertain opportunities, and other crises can tower over us like kaiju. Some battles are beyond our ability to conquer alone—but they are never beyond God’s authority.  This sermon is an invitation to stop measuring your problems against your own strength and start measuring them against the power of Yahweh. When the Leviathan in your life appears unbeatable, remember that God has already demonstrated His authority over every force beneath heaven. Your monster may be greater than you, but it is not greater than your Creator.  Website: https://coupleonukes.com Exodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/ Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? Living With Chronic Illness: Pain, Identity, Burnout, And Finding Meaning

Send us Fan Mail In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Jeffery Bone, a chronic illness coach, mental health professional, podcaster, and author who has spent more than two decades working in the chronic illness and chronic pain space. Mr. Bone’s expertise became deeply personal when he developed a chronic illness of his own, forcing him to confront the physical pain, mental exhaustion, medical uncertainty, identity loss, and emotional grief that many patients experience behind closed doors. We discuss Mr. Bone’s path from studying psychology to working one-on-one with people living through chronic pain and illness. He shares how his own health crisis began with a persistent headache and rapidly developed into fatigue, tremors, bladder pain, neurological symptoms, insomnia, brain fog, and widespread inflammation. After seeing numerous specialists without receiving a clear answer, he eventually learned that toxic mold exposure, mycotoxins, immune dysfunction, and common variable immune deficiency were major parts of his condition. This conversation examines the importance of becoming your own health advocate, seeking additional opinions, and recognizing that the human body cannot always be understood by examining one symptom or organ at a time. Mr. Bone explains how functional medicine, toxicology, immunology, genetic testing, cortisol testing, and other approaches helped reveal issues that traditional medical appointments had missed. We also discuss medical arrogance, the harm caused when symptoms are dismissed, and why a doctor saying “I don’t know” can be more valuable than offering an unsupported diagnosis. Later, we explore the mental and emotional realities of chronic illness, including grief for the former self, medical burnout, isolation, anxiety, shame, changing relationships, and the feeling that life is steadily shrinking. Mr. Bone shares how creativity, curiosity, podcasting, poetry, writing, and assigning new meaning to his pain helped him build an expanded life instead of spending every day trying to return to who he was before becoming ill. We also discuss his podcast, To The Bone: Conversations on Pain, Illness, and Meaning, along with books including Broken Bone, Carved Out of Bone, Mold Brain, Chemical Undertow, The Restless Human, The Restless Waiting Room, The Absurd Body, and The Expanded Life. https://www.drbone.live/ Website: https://coupleonukes.com Exodus, Honor Your Heart, & Nulu Knives: https://www.coupleonukes.com/affiliates/ Want to be a guest on Couple O' Nukes? We Are All Here: Suicide Prevention, Human Trafficking, & Grace In Acts 16

Send us Fan Mail In this solo Radiating Faith sermon, I explore Acts 16 and the powerful connections between spiritual discernment, human exploitation, worship during suffering, forgiveness, and suicide prevention. I examine how Paul and Silas remained faithful through opposition, physical abuse, imprisonment, and uncertainty—and how their response influenced everyone listening around them. I begin with the enslaved young woman whose spiritual condition was being exploited for financial gain. Although the spirit within her spoke words that sounded truthful, Paul refused to accept endorsement from an evil source. Her owners responded with anger when their ability to profit from her disappeared. I connect this biblical account to modern human trafficking, sexual exploitation, coercive relationships, and the difficult reality that rescuing people often threatens those who benefit from their captivity. I then examine Paul and Silas worshiping while imprisoned. Scripture specifically tells us that the other prisoners were listening, reminding us that people observe how we respond when our faith becomes costly. Worship is not merely something we practice after deliverance. It can become an act of leadership, testimony, and spiritual resistance while we are still wounded, confined, and waiting for circumstances to change. Finally, I focus on the Philippian jailer, who prepared to take his own life because he believed he had failed and could not survive the resulting shame. Paul intervened with the words, “We are all here.” I discuss why suicide prevention is connected to forgiveness, grace, accountability, and the preservation of life—even when the person in danger has harmed us. Acts 16 ultimately demonstrates that shame does not have to end in death, suffering does not silence worship, and one act of mercy can transform an individual, a household, and everyone watching.
