We get some pretty amazing emails, this week we're answering them on the podcast!

As we launch season two of Courageous Hearts we're mixing it up! We'll continue to dive into the world of fundamentalism and explore what it takes to leave, but we also want to embrace  positivity after a year of in depth research into  the most toxic and vile communities we've ever seen.

Changing your life is always hard, and scary, and requires a depth of courage that most of us aren't sure we have until we dip into the deep reserves of our heart. This season we're going to be asking our guests one question:

What's the bravest thing you've ever done?

Join us as we stand in awe of the dozens of courageous hearts we'll meet this season!

The tale of an accidental evangelical pastor’s wife

The tale of an accidental evangelical pastor’s wife

Molly’s story will knock your socks off.

Like many, she grew up in a moderately evangelical family. The rules were clear, Jesus first, purity, and obedience. She was raised to be a wife, and when she was 20 that's what she became. Quickly she realized that this new life didn't afford her the freedom that she hoped. She married a man who went to Moody college and had his heart set on being a pastor. Molly was apprehensive to become a pastor's wife, but she was told that her dreams for herself no longer mattered now that she was yoked to her husband. Her life was meant only to support him. Listen to her story of courage and triumph, how she found her footing and made a new life.

(The audio is a bit skippy in places. Bear with us, it's totally worth it to make it to the end of this one!!)

    Payton’s Story

    Payton’s Story

Purity culture took a dark turn in the early 2000’s with the popularity of Joshua Harris’s book, ‘I Kissed Dating Goodbye.’ All across America evangelical churches preached the gospel of purity, made up by a 21 year old who’d never dated.

Payton and her husband Andrew began their relationship with the book in mind, like thousands of others who followed advice given to them by trusted leaders. After they married and their life together progressed they realized how deeply flawed the church’s new adopted style of courting was. Listen to their story and the courageous way they struggled together to build a better life and a more authentic love.

Her go-to projects are peg dolls, earrings, watercolor cards and prints, and home decor. She is also always up for the challenge of a custom design or custom order. but I swear, words don’t do her work justice, my kids have had a few of her peg doll figures for three years and they look brand new. Recently she launched her business and y’all, it’s booming. You can check out all of her creations on Facebook (MEGAN MADE THESE) and Instagram (@meganmadethese). Shocking, Encouraging, Hopeful

This podcast sheds light on how beautiful religion can be and the fundamentalists that go to unwarranted depths to control and distort it. While the stories shed light on many aspects of fundamentalist Judaism and the trauma it presents to families, what the hosts don’t tout on air is the behind the scenes efforts they are making to support the men and women in the aftermath. A gut wrenching, inspirational, and motivational hour that is not only worth listening to, but a worthy cause to donate and support.

Inspiring and Enlightening

Each week, I am gobsmacked by the bravery of the women who have left these fundamentalist communities. Their courage is absolutely heroic, especially in their willingness to share their stories with us. Additionally, I am fascinated by the extra bits of knowledge I’m learning - dating practices, kosher, Shabbos, etc. 10/10 would recommend.

Powerful Wonderfully Told

I love this podcast so much and have become so enraptured with the hosts and their brave honesty. They don’t shy from speaking truth to power and yet they are so sensitive to those who don’t have that same bravery...yet.
I have spent a lot of time in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn to visit my young adult son and it’s just stunning to me that in the midst of this hip modern gentrified city there is this utterly insular and restrictive world. It’s modern anthropology. But yet it’s not just observational because there are serious moral concerns about the misogyny, abuse ( emotional, financial, sexual) to both genders that demand attention and accountability . BRAVO ladies!

( and to so-called religious men who would actually harass, insult, assault and try to intimidate women for *speaking* their truth - for shame! You reflect far more poorly on your community than do they and I hope law enforcement and protective orders get in place , because your behavior is harassment and stalking and is criminal )
