    The Great Commission

Sometimes there are things we would never know unless someone were to tell us. Other times, there are things we assume we know but unless we hear the full story we continue to operate in half-truth. Today's scripture makes it clear that there is salvation for you and for me. We access this by believing in our hearts who Jesus is, and declaring him to the world. Scripture is clear, this is not just for hired pastors but everyone. Yet, we often feel self-conscious—that we don't have a story to tell. But when you truly believe in your heart you have no shame. You don't care if others think you've lost your mind. You are a child of God and you are able to proclaim what you believe. You experience God's love so much, and he changed your life in so many ways that you cannot keep quiet. The world only knows about Jesus if someone tells them and we all have been sent in the Great Commission. But we do not go alone. Go with strength and confidence because God is with you every step. So go, plant seeds, form relationships, make disciples, baptize, and teach, and let's see what the Holy Spirit will do in the lives of others.

In reflecting upon the message of Pentecost, we are reminded of the profound significance it holds for our lives. The Spirit of God, an eternal presence, is made available to each and every one of us who believes in the name of Jesus. This same Spirit, symbolized by the burning bush, the violent wind, and the pillar of fire, is not limited by our worthiness but generously offered to all who call upon God's name. Pentecost unveils God's faithfulness, as His blessings and promises extend beyond a select few to encompass all the people of the earth. Through the remarkable gift of tongues, God's great story becomes accessible to everyone, empowering us to go forth to every nation and baptize in the name of Jesus. Furthermore, the Spirit of God acts as our advocate, articulating our deepest thoughts and carrying our inexpressible yearnings to God. In doing so, the Spirit continuously communicates the wonders of God to the world. Who will be transformed because of the Spirit's resting upon us?

Humans imitate and learn from those around them. In today's scripture, we receive a clear call to love and understand that knowing Jesus helps us grasp the depth of love. He sacrificed his life for us, but why? It only makes sense when we realize our own need and our inability to be truly connected with God. We are broken from the beginning, prone to idolatry. We cannot restore ourselves to God. Confessing Jesus as our Savior means admitting this need for salvation. Jesus willingly laid down his life for us. Now, having experienced his love, we are called to model it. We should be ready to selflessly sacrifice to save others. Maybe we're not always presented with situations to sacrifice our lives for others, but Jesus also shows us acts of charity to emulate. As followers of Christ, our hearts should break when we encounter someone in need. In those moments, we offer what we can to help. Through practicing love, we prepare ourselves to follow Jesus' example.
