If your brand already exists, can you improve it? - The Basics of Working Series

Today, we’re rounding out the conversation in our Basics of Working Series and the topic is your brand - you’re only as good as your reputation.
    In this episode, we’ll cover:
Why your brand already exists How blemishes in your reputation can precede you, and what to do about it What to consider when crafting your brand, and how that ties into your reputation, values, and goals This episode puts all the pieces of the Working Series puzzle together - the W2 vs 1099 angle, dealing with discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, and the conversation surrounding professional ethics. I’ve really enjoyed this series, and I’m super excited to round it out today and to talk with you about your brand, and reminding you that you’re only as good as your reputation. I'm even more excited because the next 4-part series is going to be all about the law - and I’m gonna nerd out on y’all! But first, let’s talk about you and your brand, and how it coincides with all the foundations of what we’ve covered here on the podcast - expectations, control, etc. Ready? Let's dive in!

My Favorite Ways to Stay Ethical: The Basics of Working Series

My Favorite Ways to Stay Ethical: The Basics of Working Series

This week's episode is the third of four episodes in the conversation in our Basics of Working Series, y’all, and the topic is ethics: ethics in your profession, personally, and what it means to work with someone outside of your profession and why ethics matters.
    Together, we’ll cover:
What being in a profession really means How walking the line between two professions - as an attorney and a social worker - has led to some very interesting ethical conversations for me How professional ethics differ from personal ethics, and how to set yourself up for success when it comes to ethics in your business and with service providers I'm always surprised at how often people in other professions are shocked at the intensity of ethics rules surrounding both my role as a lawyer and as a social worker.
Add to that the fact that I am a Certified Ethics Trainer with the State of Louisiana’s Board of Ethics, and you’d be forgiven if you thought I was an ethics buff. I kind of am, though, let’s be honest. I like rules. 😂 Can't wait to hear what you think! Dive in!

How to Avoid Discrimination + Harassment: The Basics of Working Series

How to Avoid Discrimination + Harassment: The Basics of Working Series

It doesn't matter what you do or where you've worked, you've likely seen or experienced discrimination, harassment, retaliation - or all three. Today's episode helps you identify and gives actionable steps in how to avoid it.
    Together, we’ll cover:
The difference between discrimination and harassment The biggest mistakes people make when handling a discrimination or harassment complaint - whether you’re an employee or a business owner How to set yourself up for success and avoid discrimination and harassment - as a business owner, employee,  and independent contractor Over the years, in my work with clients and students too, I’ve found that there’s some confusion about employment law issues - whether there’s discrimination or harassment, when you can do something about it. And, I have to be honest, it can be super muddy. This is why living, working, and being in integrity matters - and why being clear about who you are, what you want, and why you want it matters. And, that’s also why knowing what you will put up with and what you expect of others is imperative for a clear, profitable, and productive working relationship.

W2 vs 1099 - Does It Really Matter? - The Basics of Working Series

W2 vs 1099 - Does It Really Matter? - The Basics of Working Series

This week's episode is all about the basics of working. Have you ever wondered whether it matters to be an employee or an independent contractor? We’re talking about the Basics of Working - as a W2 and a 1099 - and the decisions you need to make surrounding these options.
    Together, we’ll cover:
The difference between being a W2 and a 1099 - from a worker’s perspective and from the business perspective What foundations you need to apply that knowledge And why it’s important that you know the difference For a lot of people, it’s about being unclear about who they are, what they want, and why they want it, and for others, the struggle is that they’ve made a choice, but don’t know how to change their choice. They double down on something that’s NOT working because they think they can’t change their minds - so today, I’m sending reminders and opening your eyes to new ways to consider what's right for you.

John, Joanna ,

Highly motivational podcast hosted by a highly inspiring person!

Being a law student and constantly meeting overworked, stressed, and unhappy lawyers made me rethink my decisions of why I chose to enter this field. Meeting Sheila helped me remember just why I did. She taught me that “settling” is never the answer, and there are happy lawyers in practice and I can be one of them! She has the magical ability to help people realize their dreams and cater to every individual, regardless of what field of work they are in. Sheila is amazing attorney, social worker, and educator but more importantly, she is an amazing person that gives you that *push* you need to start going after your dreams! This podcast is a must-listen!

Great for everyone, not just creatives!

Even non-creatives can walk away with a good message from each episode! Sheila makes you think but also gives you direction on what comes next!
