We sat down with Dr. Mosley recently to learn more about his journey to the helm of the institution founded by Daytona Beach’s own Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. He discussed the gravity of the position and the historical significance of the University. The state of Florida recently became the 15th largest economy in the world, if it were a nation of its own, with a gross domestic product exceeding $1.7 trillion. That’s not just happening by chance. The Florida Chamber Foundation has set a long-term goal of making Florida a top 10 global economy by 2030. Florida has surpassed Spain and stands just $25.5 billion behind Australia. In spring of 2023, then-chair of the Daytona Regional Chamber, Nellie Lupoli of ICI Homes, was contemplating what challenge she would issue to the Leadership Daytona class later that summer. Reviewing data from the Florida Chamber’s “Florida Scorecard”, she discovered that only 50% of 3rd graders in Volusia County were reading on or above grade level, and she knew instantly this presented an opportunity.  In part one of a two-part series of Crest of the Wave, we’ll talk with two members of Leadership Daytona Class 43 which responded to Lupoli’s challenge…Dr. Michelle Goldys from Daytona State College and Devin Miller from Brown & Brown Insurance.
