Providence, Rhode Island, is the capital and the largest city in the state, known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and unique mix of old-world charm and modern urban development. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded in 1636, Providence was a refuge for those seeking religious freedom, which has laid the foundation for the city’s commitment to diversity and tolerance. The city is also home to some of the most prestigious universities in the United States, including Brown University, an Ivy League school, and the Rhode Island School of Design. With so many college students, you would expect Providence to also have a thriving nightlife, which can be found downtown where a variety of bars, clubs, and live music venues wait to welcome students who want to socialize and let loose in the evenings and on weekends. For such a large and busy city, you would also expect that Providence has its share of crime, and while the city does have some issues with violent crime, property crimes such as burglary and motor vehicle theft are far more common. But what happens when a basic carjacking turns violent for seemingly no reason whatsoever? In June of 2000, 20-year-old Jason Burgeson and 21-year-old Amy Shute found themselves in the crosshairs of five nefarious men who were prowling the streets of Providence, looking to get into trouble. Jason and Amy were spotted by a Providence police officer around 2:15 AM on June 9th; the couple was chatting in the parking lot of Tommy’s Bar and Grille in downtown Providence. Less than 12 hours later, their bodies were found slumped against hay bales at the Button Hole Golf course, located on the border of Providence and Johnstown, Rhode Island. They had been murdered in cold blood, and it was up to the investigators to figure out what had happened to them and why. John O'Keefe: Dog Bites, Theories, and Closing Arguments (Part 6)

In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 29th, 2022, Boston Police officer John O’Keefe was found dead in a snowbank outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts. According to the medical examiner, O’Keefe had died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia. At first it seemed like a tragic accident, maybe a slip on the ice, a fall that ended in death. But as investigators dug deeper, things became far more complicated and Karen Read, O’Keefe’s girlfriend, became the center of the investigation. Evidence that there had been trouble in paradise in the romantic relationship began to surface, but so did other disturbing possibilities. What seemed like a domestic tragedy was quickly clouded by allegations of police corruption and cover-up, and an investigation that many believe was compromised from the start. What if the very people tasked with upholding the law were covering up the truth? I have been a fan of Stephanie Harlowe for years and I truly believe no other true crime creator out there is better at deep dives. I love the dynamic between Stephanie and Derek and I love how they often disagree. It makes for a more interesting listen. Keep it up, yall!!!

The recent episode about NYC was so true crime brained I couldn’t believe it. The NYPD budget has only increased since 2020. People tweeting about defunding the police did not magically defund the NYPD. NY also has an EXTREMELY pro-police and former cop mayor right now. These things are easily fact-checked. Then there’s the crime rates. Crime in NYC peaked in the late 80s after two decades of rampant violent crime. It’s been stable and low since the early 90s. There was a slight uptick during the pandemic that has now gone back down. Taking an isolated incident and using it as evidence of NYC being crime-ridden is dishonest and abysmally incorrect for a podcast that should know better. Especially when a similar incident just happened in Nashville, TN. I’m very disappointed with this podcast. You have a large audience, and spreading the demonstrably false lie that NYC is suddenly less safe is irresponsible. I hope you issue retractions.
