Journalist Sam Anderson learns that one of his high school classmates has been accused of murder in California, and travels west to find out what happened. Sam becomes immersed in the Emerald Triangle, the legendary home of pot growers, hippies, and outlaws. He discovers that his classmate became drawn into the orbit of a cultish and charismatic pot grower obsessed with psychedelic drugs. Desperation, greed, and a seemingly never-ending acid trip create a perfect storm of paranoia that ends in a moment of unspeakable violence.

Worth the listen
This was a great podcast! The story unfolds organically through the series and Sam makes an endearing narrator for the journey. Fascinating, human, and heartfelt. Great interviews, both from police records and the people Sam stumbles upon along the way. Investigative podcast journalism at its finest; kudos to all involved in bringing this story to life.
Worth a listen
A very interesting podcast about complicated and morally grey subjects. However, you end up getting frustrated with the host’s inability to take any hard position several times.
In Season 1, the narrative kind of coalesced into some weird victim-blaming of the town natives. In Season 2, the host seemingly had no respect for Zach’s wishes to be left alone, but also refused to entertain the idea that his old friend wasn’t as innocent as he claimed, despite several other witnesses collaborating their stories to call him out on lies.
It’s one thing to remain neutral, but this isn’t neutrality. It’s caving to the easier of the two sides; the one that makes you feel less uncomfortable. It makes the project lack passion, and it feels like you’re just doing something for the sake of doing it.
Had so much potential
Could’ve been such a good podcast if it was covered better. So many unnecessary interviews from people of the subjects past and so little info on the actual emerald triangle. Too much hearsay, not enough facts. Didn’t even feel like their was an actual ending to the story. When Zach said to mind your business, you should’ve.
