Journalist Sam Anderson learns that one of his high school classmates has been accused of murder in California, and travels west to find out what happened. Sam becomes immersed in the Emerald Triangle, the legendary home of pot growers, hippies, and outlaws. He discovers that his classmate became drawn into the orbit of a cultish and charismatic pot grower obsessed with psychedelic drugs. Customer Reviews
My brother was tortured by growers - lucky to be alive
My kid brother and his best friend went missing for 3 days when they were 14 in the mid 80s. He returned bloodied and with deep rope burns on his wrists and calves. Over the years he’s told me bits and pieces. He and his friend stumbled upon a grow when they mountain biked along an old fire trail. Knowing they were in danger they sped away as fast as they could but were shot at and told to stop.., then they were tied to a tree and left to die. The growers were on meth and the dealer’s girlfriend spotted my brother and his friend tied up during the delivery. She threatened to call the authorities and pulled out her own gun on the growers to get them untied. She gave them water, put their bikes in her truck and drove them to a safe trailhead. Offering them a line of speed to boot.
He wasn’t the same afterwards - we grew up hard but that experience broke something in him. The scars on his wrists have held him back in so many ways.
Interesting but flawed
This was an interesting podcast subject and I learned a lot about this lifestyle and tragic murder and abused workers. That being said I was not very impressed with podcaster’s decisions. I especially disliked it when during the last episode he went up the mountain to find the old pot growing operation. I think it was fine to go up but then once he was there he decided to partake in using his own marijuana. After learning all he had about how mistreated the workers are on these illegal grow sites I just found it really distasteful. I’m sure he probably bought it at a legal dispensary but it seems very probable that the actual marijuana could have originated from an illegal grower and he is just aiding in other’s suffering and becoming part of the problem.
Sophomoric podcaster investigates a non story
In summary: a guy I sort of knew from my small town got convicted of manslaughter in a weed growing-gone-bad deal. He was on the lam from a couple of other drug busts and went to murder mountain to hide out, grow weed and they got ripped off. So they got blind drunk, dropped some acid and they went and killed the guy. The ‘friend’ had no interest in me making the podcast and asked me not to in respect of family. But this was my only brush with fame so I ignored his wishes. No surprise findings, twists, revelations- just blew a summer pretending I too was a slacker stoner and lived in tent in Humboldt.
