We decided it was time to try out some story driven games. Specifically, short, emotional games. Games that “Make You Cry” or make you feel something. It seems that in order for a game to be considered ‘well written,’ it has to in some way attempt to be sad--usually by killing off a supporting character. This is rarely earned, however.

Zombies are scary. Or at least they should be. When was the last time you played a zombie game? Here’s a better question, when was the last time you played a zombie game and even realized it was about zombies? I would bet that you’ve played a game that focused on zombies, and the zombies didn’t even enter into your mind as a part of the game itself.

The late 90s set the foundation for modern gaming soundtracks. A few video game soundtrack superstars like Nobuo Uematsu had already made a name for themselves before the 1990s, but fans of video game music still represented a small sub-culture. Music was slowly transitioning from 8 bit to 16 or 24 bit but the days of chiptune were slowly fading away.

During the golden age of video game arcades, chip-tune, or 8-bit music, became a staple of gaming culture. The peak of chip-tune took place in the 1980s, with people around the world humming their favorite video game tunes in their heads as they forked over all of their change to play at their favorite arcades. Before the days of orchestral soundtracks and AAA budgets, 8-bit was king.
