Investigative journalist Liz Farrell — and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — sit down with lawyer (and journalist!) Julie Grant, host of Court TV’s “Opening Statements,” to talk about everything from Alex Murdaugh’s lies to Bill Cosby’s very worst behavior outside the courthouse to the emotional impact of the Colucci trial postponement. The three also discuss vicarious trauma and how that can affect reporters, what law school is REALLY like, as well as Julie’s unusual path to her well-deserved career and what aspect of the justice system she’d change if she had a magic wand.
Julie is a journalist, a lawyer — and a trial court expert. Above all, she’s an advocate for victims. We really admire Julie’s work because of how she chooses to keep victims’ perspectives and their stories at the forefront of highly publicized national cases.
Julie is a big advocate of therapy for everyone — not just lawyers and journalists — and she was the perfect guest for us to have during Mental Health Awareness Month because that’s such an important message.

Listen to this podcast as soon as you make a post now I started a Twitter account and I also look at YouTube to see some of the videos that you post just to get a better understanding the way you explain and I enjoy listening listening and learning about the things that people do and think they can get away with.
You are a help with my own fight
I was not a listener from the beginning. But as soon as I found the podcast I binged it and am still an avid listener. The work you all do is so valuable to victims and society in general. I think you shine a light on a broken system that many do not know about because they have had no direct involvement. Nor do they want to. The judicial system is something people know is there but don’t understand how unforgiving it can be and how manipulating it can be. Without your advocacy for victims rights I don’t think people would be held accountable in the recent cases you have covered. I have learned a lot from ya’ll, and unfortunately am fighting for my own families rights and pull from things you say. I pray for you, the work you do and any victim. God bless you all.

I love your assured, frank professionalism celebrating a year’s benefit to your listeners. Your open fear of the vengeful power held by the prisoner relays the power he had in his community and in the larger political scene - a huge obstacle to change. To say nothing of the power of drug cartel involvement with the long lowcountry history of contraband importation and history of supplementing income with ill-gotten gains seen in Blackbeard’s colleague, “gentleman pirate” Stede Bonnet, hanged in Charleston, SC in 1718.
