Every day, creators give us professional-level content from the back of a metaphorical (or literal) closet. No creative form is quite so liberating as the podcast. But it's also a labor of love. What goes on behind the scenes? On "Cut Loose," we take you inside their closets and inside the minds of indie podcasters to ask: how do they do it?

    Joshua Hoe from "Decarceration Nation"

    Joshua Hoe from "Decarceration Nation"

Welcome to Episode 10 of Cut Loose. If you’re listening to this in America, I hope that you’re ready to enjoy a beautiful Thanksgiving.

I don’t know if I’ll be home for Thanksgiving yet! I’ve been visiting family in Germany and am now stuck in quarantine, with this next wave of COVID that’s sweeping across the continent. But it’s been a good opportunity to slow down and reflect.

If you ask me what I’m thankful for this year, one thing I think I’d say are *moments.* Moments are something you’re going to start hearing a lot about from us at Uncut.fm. Moments of audio but also, on a more personal level, moments here with my family.

I’m also thankful for podcasters like today’s guest, Joshua Hoe, the host of “Decarceration Nation.”

If you’re interested in the topic of prison reform, you may have heard of Josh. “Decarceration Nation” hasn’t quite reached Ear Hustle fame — and if you haven’t heard Ear Hustle, you should definitely check it out, we reference it more than once in this conversation — but his show has become a reference point for people across the political spectrum who, like him, are interested in radically reimagining criminal justice in America. He’s interviewed people such as author Clint Smith, CNN’s Van Jones, and law professors John Pfaff and Rachel Barkow.

I wanted to talk to Josh to better understand what it means to use your show as a tool for advocacy. How do you attract attention to your cause in such a crowded social media world? What does it means to show up for your cause, and your work, every single week?

    Vidhya Iyer from "Mindful Businesses"

    Vidhya Iyer from "Mindful Businesses"

On this episode, I speak with Vidhya Iyer, the host of "Mindful Businesses." If you’ve listened to prior episodes, you’re probably used to some of the standard questions I tend to ask our guests — what is their creative process, what have they learned about themselves through podcasting. And I would say the first part of my conversation with Vidhya — to the extent you know me — is somewhat predictable. Vidhya shares some of her podcasting secrets, from why she believes in word of mouth as essential to podcast promotion to the voice exercises she’s adopted before she records, inspired by the practices of radio journalists at NPR. But our conversation toward the end really surprised me in the best way. Vidhya shares a more complicated side of podcasting: namely, how do you handle a situation where a guest isn’t being authentic, or tries to promote something that doesn’t align with your values, or brand.

Check out Mindful Businesses wherever you get your podcasts and don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe.

Tyrone Smith from "Got Em' Coach"

Tyrone Smith from "Got Em' Coach"

Tyrone is the host of “Got ‘Em Coach”, a podcast that focuses on — in his words —a variety of quality court-related content as well as good sneaker info. It revolves around lifestyle, fashion, basketball banters and everything good about the court life.

With that in mind, I’ll warn you up top that I know nothing about basketball. 🏀 If you’re anything like me, just know that it doesn’t matter. Tyrone and I had such a great conversation about how he was raised, how he found his way into podcasting and how he's developed the discipline to stick with his show for four years and counting.

You can listen to Got ‘Em Coach wherever you get your podcasts.
