Episode 85: Tim Proctor - Goodbye 2021 - Hello 2022
The first episode of 2022 is a little bit different this year for the Check Your Six podcast. Craig was not in the studio for this podcast and may be out for a few episodes while he deals with the VA here in Central Florida. This was a recap of the second half of 2021 and the fantastic guests that we have had on the podcast. Both Craig and I have been honored to be a part of this for the past year and 1/2 and have learned a great deal from those that we have been honored to have in the studio. Going over some of the guests we had in the last 7 months of 2021 made me realize how fortunate we are to be here in Central Florida and have the freedom to do business on a fairly regular basis without some of the severe restrictions that come in other parts of the country. I am eternally grateful to all that have been a part of this journey as well as those that have helped guide me along the path we are taking. Here's looking at 2022!!
Episode 84: Jimmy T. Smith & Brian Fay - Concerned Veterans For America - "Mr Smith Goes To Washington"
Episode 84 of the Check your Six Podcast brought a couple of guests into the GRP Studios, former FL State Representative Jimmie T Smith and Brian Fay, who are part of CVA, Concerned Veterans For America. Both of these gentlemen are Army veterans and are working through the process of accountability for the VA system and other programs that will not only help veterans but could overall impact other government programs. While the ideals that began with the Veterans Administration(VA) were honorable and with good intentions, what the VA has become is like most government operated programs and largely mismanaged and poorly run. Something that was designed to honor those that have served has become a monolith that moves with the speed of an iceberg at time and can cause almost more damage than it heals. They gave some very interesting information on a variety of topics, including the number of veterans that have committed suicide in the parking lots of some of the VA locations in Florida alone. The lack of accountability, inaccurate reporting and leadership that is more concerned about their own agenda than the welfare of the veterans it was designed to serve. There are a LOT of fantastic individuals that work for the VA including those providing the care for the patients, but very simply, it is broken and needs to be healed!!
Episode 83: Daisy Ramirez - Village Connect - "It Takes A Village"
Some minor technical issues made us push Episode 83 of the Check Your Six podcast back a bit, but were able to finally pull it together and get Daisy Ramirez into GRP Studios and record her session. Coming from a background in logistics, even though the degree was from THE Ohio State University, that experience has helped her turn it into a platform the helps connect businesses and individuals in a community. Daisy did a little self-taught application to learn coding and created something that she thinks can help connect local businesses with the local consumers looking for their products and services. Instead of going to the large box or online stores, Daisy is really looking to build the relationships and community by supporting your local business!!
Episode 82: Christina Clark - ACE Human Resources - "Holding All The Aces"
Episode 82 of the Check Your Six podcast brought Christina Clark into the GRP Studios to talk about ACE Human Resources. Besides being yet another Seminole Chamber member and part of the leadership for the Altamonte Chapter, Christina is also someone that has known since she was 16 that Human Resources was where she wanted to be. We talked about the transition from a "personnel department" to "Human Resources" in the past 20 years or so, the need for every business to have SOP's, employee handbooks, job descriptions and other things that you might only expect from large businesses. Also talked about some of the challenges in her industry like billing, sales, marketing a Human Resources business and a variety of other topics. Both Craig and I realized that she would have been a great candidate for early in the podcast but at least we were able to get her in now and let her share her expertise!!
Episode 81: Blanca Diaz - Nexa Mortgage - Riding On The Mortgage Highway
Blanca Diaz and Jessica Ale from Nexa Mortgage stopped by GRP Studios for Episode 81 of the Check Your Six podcast and talked about their journey from corporate to independent mortgage brokers. Both Blanca and Jessica had worked in the corporate/credit union industry and earlier this year, Blanca determined to venture out on her own with the support of Nexa Mortgage. A short time later Jessica left her credit union position and joined her, both of them are now taking this journey on the mortgage highway. They talked about the differences in the corporate and independent mortgage business and how they both desired to help those looking for mortgages on a deeper and more personal basis than banks traditionally offer.
Episode 80: Mike Mathers - US Health - "Tiptoe Through The Insurance Tulips"
Episode 80 of the Check Your Six podcast brought Mike Mathers into the GRP Studios to talk about a different side of the insurance game. Mike is a retired Navy veteran that found his niche in the family atmosphere that he discovered at US Health. Many veterans that get out of the service do find it challenging sometimes to find a company that exhibits some of the same camaraderie that we experienced while we served. Mike has found that at US Health and he talked about that as well as some of the aspects of individual and business applications of what he does!!
