    Another NFL season is underway, so here are my division winners plus my Super Bowl pick. Discussed on the podcast * Why the Patriots and Seahawks are exhibit A * My AFC division winners * My NFC division winners * My Super Bowl teams * My Super Bowl pick Twenty-five years ago I cannot believe it has been 25 years since 9/11. Like many of us, I remember it like yesterday. Just three days before, the cruise group I led on a radio station promotion had flown from Florida to Connecticut. Our route took us right by the World Trade Center. I can still hear the captain say, “look to your left and you will see the World Trade Center.” No one could imagine how the world would turn upside down less than 72 hours later. That fateful Tuesday morning, I was on the air with Brad Davis on WDRC-AM in Hartford, CT, along with the other stations on the Talk of Connecticut statewide network. I was the news and sports director for the network. Moment after giving my 8:45 sports update, the story broke. Our tv set in the adjacent newsroom was tuned to the Today Show on NBC. Before 9:00, we knew something was wrong, as video showed one of the planes flying into the twin towers. Within a half hour another plane crashed into the towers and soon, we witnessed the collapse of both buildings. The pit in my stomach was something I had never experienced. What was happening, we all asked in the studios. Soon, we were on the air with our sister station in New York City, WOR 910, located just blocks from the scene. Bulkeley Broadcasting owned both WOR and the stations in Connecticut. We were getting eyewitness reports, while incredulous over what was happening. By this point we had suspended regular programming and were covering the story non stop. Soon we heard of the crash at the Pentagon and the crash in the field in Pennsylvania. We stayed on the air with local coverage that day until about 2:30, before handing it over to the network. Our normal sign off time was 10:00 AM. The days to follow would be as gut churning as Sep. 11. Our world changed forever that day. It seems hard to believe it’s been a quarter of a century. Never forget! DAN This is a public episode.     SEC and LSU at war

    The war is on between the SEC and one of its members, plus the NFL season gets underway. Podcast rundown * The SEC is not messing around with its ban on pros returning to play in college sports * What LSU will do * NFL kicks off another season * Picks For Kicks returns * Who will win Patriots-Seahawks and 49ers-Rams Some other points * It’s really surreal watching Rockies-Yankees series. Many of the Rockies played for the Hartford Yard Goats, and played against the Yankees farm club Somerset. More than half the players on that field played at Dunkin’ Park in Hartford within the last two years. * For the record, Cam Schlittler, considered by some to be the leading candidate to win this season’s AL Cy Young award, was Somerset’s starting pitcher against the Yard Goats at Dunkin’ Park on Opening Day last season and Gabriel Hughes started for the Yard Goats against Somerset. Last night they opposed each other in the Bronx. * Ralph D. Russo, senior college sportswriter for The Athletic, posted this on X yesterday: * Incidentally, the MAC, of which Western Michigan is a member, is demanding the result of the Michigan 13-12 victory be overturned and WM be rewarded the 12-7 victory.     Western Michigan was robbed

    Western Michigan was robbed. One second should have never been put back on the clock to allow Michigan to run one more play on Saturday night and avoid the upset. Instead, the Wolverines won, 13-12. On today’s Labor Day commentary I talk briefly about the game and also how MLB is once again missing the boat, when failing to schedule games on holidays. Some other thoughts on the Western Michigan-Michigan fiasco: * Someone pointed out to me what an embarrassment it would have been for the Big 10, if it lost two games to huge underdogs in three days. Remember, on Thursday night, UMass shocked Rutgers with a 37-21 win at Rutgers. * Another thing that is not a good look: the game used Big 10 officials. Isn’t it time college football bite the bullet and stop with the conference-only officials approach? In this betting era, any appearance of impropriety - and this is not to disparage the officials on Saturday night - must be removed. * In case you missed the play: * Western Michigan was a 27.5-point underdog. The Big 10 can issue all the statements and video angles of the play it wants. The reality is, when there is a whiff of suspicion, the public is going to howl, especially in today’s media-crazed world.     Is Ohtani calling the shots?

    Good morning, all and happy Saturday! Podcast rundown * Is Shohei Ohtani calling the shots when it comes to pitching for the Dodgers? * Ohtani’s slump * Ohtani’s aches and pains * College football swings into high gear with Clemson vs. LSU tonight * Why the game is controversial * Lane Kiffin up to his old tricks with new team Some other items on which to chew: * Many of you know, Division I schools of note pay upcoming teams money to play games, normally early in the season. It is a way to buy a victory. Such was not the case Thursday night, when UMass shocked Rutgers, 37-21, in the football opener for both schools. UMass snapped a 16-game losing streak against a Big Ten Conference team no less. Further rubbing salt into the wounds, Rutgers guaranteed UMass a $1.55M payout. UMass was a 29-point underdog entering the game. And yes, UMass head coach Joe Harasymiak was defensive coordinator at Rutgers before taking the UMass job in 2025. You can’t make this stuff up. * As you might imagine, angry Rutgers fans are calling for coach Greg Schiano to be fired. * The Pro Football Hall of Fame is changing the way it selects future hall of fame members. The changes are too detailed to get into, but suffice it to say, call it the Bill Belichick rule. Like him or not, Belichick is the football coach GOAT and the fact he did not make the hall last February, in his first year of eligibility, was a joke. It was likely Belichick would not have made it again next year, when the vote is held in February, as more candidates come up for consideration. Now he will likely be elected. The hall claims the changes have been in the making for 2 1/2 years. Believe that if you want. I’m not buying it. The egg on the hall’s face was too big to ignore, when Belichick did not make the final ballot last February. It’s no more complicated than that. * With labor strife on the horizon, does MLB know something we do not? MLB announced yesterday all 30 teams will begin their spring training exhibition game schedule on Feb. 19. Of course, I’m old enough to remember when the exhibition games did not start until the first week in March, but let’s not go there. Thank you for subscribing to the newsletter and have a great day!
