Racial Consciousness In Your Dance Classroom... Are You Doing Enough?

Racial Consciousness In Your Dance Classroom... Are You Doing Enough?

I want to make sure my students understand the beauty and possibility of diversity.

So I’m having uncomfortable conversations in brave spaces.

My talk with Jinah Parker… was amazing!

It was filled with good energy, openness, and commitment. And I am going to recap it for you.

On episode #91 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into the main points from this workshop that stuck with me:
Even if you own/teach at/dance at an all-White studio, it is still your responsibility to make it more racially diverse. Dance history is gold! Know it and incorporate it into your teaching. Microaggressions exist. We have to do our best to cut them out.
I truly believe that having these open and honest conversations will drive the change we need.

This is how I’m doing my part.

Rewiring the Dance Education System with Kim Elliott

Rewiring the Dance Education System with Kim Elliott

I don’t know if ya’ll are ready for this… but here we go!

Are you a dancer who feels like you have to embrace Eurocentric styles of dance to be considered “serious?”

Or, maybe you’re a studio owner who doesn’t have much diversity in your curriculum?

Why does the dance world value certain styles of dance over others?

The answers to these questions can be as complex as the questions themselves, but if we want change, we have to dig deeper and continue the conversation.

On episode #90 of the Dance Boss Podcast, my guest Kim Elliott dives all the way in! We talk about how to bring more racial consciousness into your dance classroom, how to shift the value from certain dance techniques to others, and the importance of demonstrating what diversity really is.

    We also talk about:

    Alignment…

    Calling…

    Purpose…

    And leaning in!
