    Georgia Rappleye: Life After Media

    Georgia Rappleye: Life After Media

Georgia Rappleye is a fourth-grade literacy teacher in Florida and a veteran of the media industry. We met years ago when a small team of us opened the New York office of a Silicon Valley content startup -- afterwards, Georgia went on to become a VP at CBS and later launched a women's travel startup called MunSun Retreats. I was lucky enough to attend one of MunSun's first trips to Turks and Caicos, where Georgia (by then also a certified life coach) helped me find a greater sense of clarity and direction in my career. Today, she is a fourth-grade teacher in Florida, where she has been working and teaching under lockdown for the past year. In this episode, Georgia and I talk about how she's pivoted her career several times over the last ten years, what it means to trust your instincts, and the rewards and challenges of launching your own business.

Caitlin Moscatello: Pregnant During the Pandemic

Caitlin Moscatello: Pregnant During the Pandemic

Caitlin Moscatello is the author of See Jane Win: The Inspiring Story of Women Changing American Politics and an award-winning journalist specializing in gender, reproductive rights, and politics. She is the founder of Repro, a free newsletter covering reproductive rights legislation at the state and federal levels in the United States. Caitlin and I became great friends years ago when we both worked at Glamour in New York -- she is someone I am always in awe of for her passion, her work ethic, and her thorough and tireless commitment to reporting.

In this episode, which we recorded in late May 2020, Caitlin and I talk about her pregnancy during the Covid-19 pandemic; we also briefly discuss the state of the media industry as well as the upcoming election and what she learned about women in politics while researching, reporting, and writing See Jane Win (it's a fantastic book, I strongly recommend you pick it up if you haven't already read it).

Jennifer Anderson: Why Development Matters So Much Right Now

Jennifer Anderson: Why Development Matters So Much Right Now

Jennifer Anderson is currently a consultant for the World Bank Group; she was previously a senior business analyst for the City of Seattle (and was working there when Covid-19 landed on the west coast) and the Director of Education Program Development at Save the Children US. But most importantly... Jen and I were freshman year college roommates! We're still very close today, though we haven't seen each other in a few years. I wanted to catch up with Jen to find out how it's going in Seattle and also ask her about whether there are some key learnings from her extensive experience and history working in international development that could be applied to what become so plainly apparent about the state of things in the United States today. She was very diplomatic about it all (I'd expect nothing less!).

India-Jewel Jackson: How to Expatriate Yourself

India-Jewel Jackson: How to Expatriate Yourself

India-Jewel Jackson is a technology content strategist based in Amsterdam. India and I have been good friends for more than a decade -- we first met when I interviewed with her for a job at the digital media company where she was working at the time (spoiler alert: I didn't get the job, but we hit it off right away and have been friends ever since!). Before India expatriated to Munich in 2017 -- later Berlin and now Amsterdam -- she was a beauty and style director in New York and launched the branded content studios at Hearst. In this episode of the podcast, India and I talk about her career background, how she decided to move abroad, and how *you too* can expatriate yourself. Did you know that there's a pretty easy and inexpensive process whereby American freelancers can expatriate to the Netherlands?

Angie Mar: The Beatrice Inn and the Future of Restaurants

Angie Mar: The Beatrice Inn and the Future of Restaurants

Chef Angie Mar is the award-winning chef-owner of The Beatrice Inn. We met when Angie was honored as a Food & Wine Best New Chef in 2017 and ever since then, The Beatrice Inn has been one of my favorite restaurants in New York. Some of my best recent memories of New York City have been early evenings and late nights perched at the corner of the bar drinking smoked Manhattans and gossiping with Angie over plates of her signature fried chicken. Before I moved to Hong Kong last year, I made sure my very last supper in NYC was whiskey-aged beef at the Bea. In this episode of the podcast we talk about how Angie has pivoted her business during the Covid-19 crisis and what could come next for chefs and restaurants in New York.

Jee Park: PR and Parenting in NYC During the Covid-19 Crisis

Jee Park: PR and Parenting in NYC During the Covid-19 Crisis

Jee Park is a Senior Vice President at Magrino PR in New York, a former television producer, and a mom of two living in New York City. I've known Jee for years -- on a professional level as a colleague and collaborator as well as on a friend level (we found out pretty early on that we share a lot of very strong opinions on a lot of things in our industries). In this podcast, Jee and I talk about how food and wine businesses are pivoting in the current coronavirus crisis, how the PR industry is as busy as it ever was, and what parenting two school-age children is like under the current social distancing and school closure situation.
