This is the place where we dissect and then discover the many ways ITD teachers all over this country are using their passion to create passionate students. We talk of measuring and manipulating a multitude of materials of design and divergent thought, of creation with our minds and with our hands. And most of all, we talk of growing great young people because of course that is what we do.

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 15: Teaching Students To Literally Fly With Chris Barry

Just imagine heading to school in the morning knowing that today you are going to soar. Chris Barry’s students know exactly what that feels like. They know what it is like to be at the controls of an aircraft.  Undertaking flight training at high school is a reality for these students in Victoria.
Twice Victorian teacher of the year Chris is literally teaching his students to soar. Not just that, he is teaching them the skills required today to become an airline captain in the future.
I think you will love it.
You can listen here to an inspirational teacher, Chris Barry.

Thanks to Chris for the chat

So what does that mean other than I like to show off my alliteration skills? Since coming back to teaching a few years ago the thing that strikes me most, and frankly scared me most is how lonely this job is. How little we know about what is happening in our subject area. The classroom next door, a class in the next school, let alone the next town are a mystery to me. I know there are teachers out there doing incredible things and this (the podcast) is a way for me to find out and be inspired. I would like to invite you along to listen and learn, to be inspired by some of the sensational teachers I speak to on the “Bridge Building Podcast – from technology to the trades”

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 14: Building Business in Grades Five and Six at Ambrose State School

Today, I am speaking with Matthew Williams from Ambrose State School.
Just imagine being given the task to come up with a fully functioning business idea and to make a profit in just ten weeks. This mission was given to a class of 10, 11 and 12 year old students from Ambrose State School and more than half achieved the goal.
Partnering with Startup Gladstone, ideas were generated, designs were created, cost analysis, marketability and on to sales, from cakes to lawn mowers and 3D printed ear savers, this is just a sensational story. I think you will love it.
You can listen here to a very proud and inspirational teacher, Matthew Williams.
Thanks to Mathew for the chat

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 13: How to Start a CO2 Racing Program With CO2 Guru Keith Holledge

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 13: How to Start a CO2 Racing Program With CO2 Guru Keith Holledge

Today, I am speaking with Keith Holledge the creator of CO2 racing here in Queensland.  Well actually I am not doing that much talking, because Keith gave just so much knowledge, he simply didn’t leave anything out.
Starting next year Shaun, he sits next to me in the staffroom and is planning to start a CO2 design program with his year 9s and we asked Keith for his advice on how to do that.  You will hear he did just that.
Now this program runs nearly twice as long as my normal, but if you are considering getting into CO2s, I think you will love it.
    Thanks Keith for the chat!

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 11: Geography Teacher, Brett Dascombe Prepares Students For Surveying

Bridge Building Podcast Episode 11: Geography Teacher, Brett Dascombe Prepares Students For Surveying

Today, I am speaking with Brett Dascombe, a geography teacher at Wavell State High and some of the stuff he does is just sensational.
    Why a geography teacher?
Well Brett tells me that one of the careers he is preparing his students for is surveying and that overlaps with us just beautifully.
We will be talking about spatial technologies, story maps, competitions, promoting students' work but the most important thing I got out of it all is that passionate teachers tend to turn out passionate kids.
Thanks to Brett  for the chat!
