Have you ever wondered how news stories and bestselling biographies get researched and published?

This illustrious father and daughter team of American authors delve into details of their writing processes and how they create biographies and news articles from concept to completion. It will be useful to journalists, writers, and anyone interested in learning more about the making of current news stories, researching influential biographies, the lives of sportsmen, and how history is written.

They explore popular social issues in America today and talk about how these issues originally evolved and then developed over many decades throughout the country. Racism, Native American assimilation, sports heroes, politicians and the news business are among many topics they discuss. Sarah, a journalist who has appeared on national TV, and is a gifted playwright, asks questions in her beautiful, perfectly-intoned voice. And her father has decades of experience in the art of storytelling his numerous Pulitzer-Prize winning bestsellers. He shares his news gathering business experience at the Washington Post and other newspapers amongst his many achievements. He has also appeared on CNN many times including at the Clinton and Obama Inaugurations after publication of his bestselling books about the Presidents.

Like me, you will surely find these two performers very enjoyable to listen to. They cover a lot of ground here in their series of current social challenges in America, the nuts of bolts of writing and preparing material for publication, and their varied and remarkable experiences in the publishing business.

Father and Son podcast

It was a first for me to listen in on this. I almost felt like I was violating their privacy at first. It was great to hear two authors discussing the process of writing and soon enough I no longer felt I was intruding. Fascinating for me!

Routine

Great writing advice from a great writer. Sharing this with doctoral students who are facing the task of doing research and writing their dissertations. Yes a dissertation is not a best selling Pulitzer Prize winning biography. But DM’s solid advice and his easy conversation translates across the genres.
