"Dad, wanna watch a movie?"
"That's not a movie."
Who with a teenager hasn't had that conversation before?! In our home, Sam KNOWS what is best and dad is just a stick in the mud. But begrudgingly, daughter dearest has come to see that dad might know something about film after all. So when Sam confessed that she REALLY liked horror films and dad said that he REALLY didn't, they thought that together, maybe they could learn something about the genre.
Come along with them as they watch some of the best films ever made, that just happen to be scary.
Dead and Slaughter are Dad and Daughter, making their way through many a horror show.
Dead and Slaughter investigate the mystery of the videotape that when watched puts you on the clock for seven days before you die at the hands of Samara, a very angry, vengeful young girl. But unlike so many other films of this genre, The Ring has no violence or gore and Samara is a very sympathetic character. This film is widely regarded as one of the best horror films of this century, after dreading watching it, did Sam agree?
Dad and Sam head in to deep space with the crew of the Nostromo to answer a supposed distress call. In reality we are on our way to enjoying one of the best science fiction/monster horror movies of all time. 1979's Alien has held up incredibly well and Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley remains one of the iconic badass women of film. We are joined by amateur horror film maker Rion Smith to discuss the importance of this classic in the oeuvre.

28 Days Later
Dead and Slaughter return with a review of Danny Boyle's zombie classic 28 Days Later. No more slow moving, brain eating undead here, just full speed sprinting infected. But will they instill even the slightest discomfort in 15 year old Sam? In a word...nope.
Episode 4: The Shining
Dead and Slaughter are off to the high country with a stay at the Overlook in beautiful Colorado. While Stanley Kubrick's film is a classic it diverges from the King novel upon which it is based in many important ways. Still, it resonated with dad and Sam as well as our guest for this episode, Courtney Baker. Have a listen to our thoughts on the importance of this film and where we think it ranks against the others that we have discussed already.
Episode 3: Rosemary's Baby
Dead and Slaughter visit the Bramford building in Manhattan. Home of Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse as well as a cast of dark and strange characters. The film is considered one of the classics in the horror genre and for very good reason. Sam and dad discuss the film and the themes that have kept it so relevant for more than fifty years.
Episode 2: The Exorcist
Dead and Slaughter find religion and explore the Exorcist, the classic horror film from 1973 widely appreciated as one of the scariest movies ever and one of the best. We discuss the impact that it had on us and talk about some of the controversies that surrounded the film when it first came out.
You both are so creative.
Great show guys!
Finally a podcast my daughters & I can all listen to!
Dead and Slaughter
Clever and educational podcast that will change your perspective on scary movies and inspire a view of the shinning or other classics that inflict deep psychological horror, as Dad and Sam explain articulately what this is by analyzing a 1960s classic in this episode. They include the history and art of film making that will deepen your appreciation of older films and having your mind focus on the analysis of it all may numb some of the fear and anxiety that usually scares me away from these films in the first place! Some more dad and daughter banter may be appreciated by some :)
